Double Homicide Investigation In Metairie

On April 22nd, 11:53 PM, Elizabeth Pence of 3717 Clifford Drive, Metairie dialed 911 to report husband and son had been shot and appeared to be dead. Responding officers located the bodies of David and Nicholas Pence in the living room; both suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. David Pence, who was sitting in a chair, had gunshot wound to the neck, chest and leg. Nicholas Pence, was lying on the floor, a short distance from his father, had gunshot wounds to the face and the side of his head. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
Crime Scene Technicians recovered four spent 12 gauge shotgun shells in the area where both victims were discovered. Mrs. Pence told investigators she was asleep in her bedroom when she heard what sounded like glass breaking and possibly the sounds of gunshots. When she got up from her bed to investigate what the sounds were, it was then she discovered her husband and son had been shot, which prompted her to call 911. She also reported that her purse, containing various items including her I-Pad and I-phone, was missing from a kitchen counter.
During an interview of a friend of Nicholas Pence investigators learned he left the Pence residence a short time before the discovery of the victims being reported shot. He told investigators as he left the residence he observed a white SUV and its occupants acting suspiciously as they moved through the block with the headlights of the SUV off. The witness described the SUV as a Toyota Highlander, white in color. This witness also reported that he, Nicolas Pence and several other friends were at the Pence’s home celebrating a flag football game victory.
While processing the scene, Homicide Investigators were made aware that a vehicle burglary had occurred a short distance away on Clifford Drive. A canvass of the neighborhood revealed residential video surveillance showing a black male pulling on door handles of vehicles near the intersection of Clifford Drive and 9th Street. An SUV was also seen on this video and appeared to be connected with the black male. During the early morning hours of Thursday April 23rd, we would become aware of several additional vehicle burglaries in this same neighborhood. It should be noted; Investigators discovered the door to David Pence’s Mustang, which was parked in the driveway, was partially ajar. The glove compartment appeared to have been rifled through. Also on Thursday, April 23rd, our Fingerprint Examiners identified prints lifted from one of the burglarized vehicles. Those fingerprints were identified as belonging to Haraquon Degruy, black female, date of birth 03-30-1997. Upon this discovery, Detective David Deroche of the Burglary Section obtained an arrest warrant from Degruy for burglary.
On April 23rd, members of the CIC researched the ALPR cameras in the area of the homicide and located a Toyota Highlander, white in color, passing a camera near the scene of the homicide shortly after it was reported. Investigators learned it was stolen in an armed robbery that occurred in New Orleans East.
The following morning, members of the JPSO/US Marshall Task Force were searching for Degruy when they observed the white Highlander parked near an apartment complex in New Orleans East. They established surveillance of this vehicle and soon thereafter observed a black male, later identified as Dexter Allen, 17, and a female; later identified as Degruy, enter the vehicle. When the Task Force members attempted to stop the vehicle, Allen, who was the driver, refused to stop and led the investigators on a chase, which ended near Downman Road and the Interstate when the vehicle crashed. Degruy was apprehended immediately, but Dexter fled and was apprehended after a brief chase.
A search of this stolen vehicle revealed property belonging to Elizabeth Pence, the wife and mother of the victims. Degruy was interviewed by Detectives Roniger and Deroche, along with Sergeant Rodrigue, and admitted to being in the area of the homicide in the stolen Highlander. She advised she was with Dexter Allen. She further admitted both were committing auto burglaries. She continued by saying at one point she was driving the Highlander as Allen walked through the neighborhood. At one point, and Allen returned to the Highlander, retrieved a shotgun he had in the vehicle and told her to wait for him. He returned a short time later with the shotgun, an I-Pad and a cell phone. He advised her he had killed someone and told her to drive them from the area. They traveled to his mother’s address, later identified as 2227 Arts Street, New Orleans.
Members of the Louisiana State Police assisted with a search warrant at this location and a Mossberg pump-action shotgun was recovered from under this residence. Additional seized items, commonly taken in auto burglaries were also recovered. Investigators are attempting to determine if these items were taken in burglaries. This same weapon, through ballistics was confirmed to be the same weapon that fired the shot shell casings recovered on the scene.
On Saturday, April 25th, Detectives Brad Roniger and Tommy Gai interviewed Allen at OPP, where he was being held on numerous charges associated with his flight from the Task Force members. Allen admitted to being with Degruy, confessing to committing the vehicle burglaries, however, he denied any involvement in the murders of David and Nicholas Pence.
Dexter Allen remains in Orleans Parish Prison. A hold has been placed on him from JP for two counts of First Degree Murder.
Haraquon Degruy has been booked into JPCC with two counts of Accessory After the Fact to First Degree Murder along with one count of Vehicle Burglary.
