Colours of accessories VS main clothing?

Hiya, newbie here :)

My birthday party in just over a week will be Roaring 20s themed, I have found a very nice pearl-coloured dress to which I have added cream fringing for extra flapper-effect, and I have cream white kitten-heeled lace-up shoes to go with. All lovely so far.

HOWEVER I'm having trouble finding accessories to match/compliment the white. So would it be OK to then have a black cloche hat, black handbag, black scarf/boa/shawl and maybe even black long satin gloves?

I have all these things already or can buy them cheaply but don't want to find myself looking odd! If I do this, should I then have black shoes too?

Argh!!

(bear in mind it's allowed to look a little "costumey" as it's a birthday party, not daywear)

IMHO, complimentary-but-different accessories will always trump an outfit where everything is the one colour. If anything, the latter always looks much more costumey. Compare, for instance, the classic elegance of someone like George Clooney in a simple, RatPack style black suit with a black tie and white shirt (or, indeed, in full black tie semi-formal wear) with the young pretenders who appear to think it clever to wear all black - shirt, tie and all - and end up looking simply ghastly.

In your case, I would go with the black, or other strong colour that complements the white dress. Is it a definite white pearl, or more of a champagne tinge? If the former, that makes it such a neutral shade that you can go with pretty much any colour; if the latter, I would stick to the black as planned. I'm no expert in the 20s period ladies' clothing, so I can't advise on what would be strictly historically correct, though the black seems right to my mind. No idea about other colours.

OK, well as long as it doesn't make you scream "ugh no, how odd!" then I feel pretty good about it :D

All I'm missing really is the cloche hat, and getting a black instead of a white one saves me about £10!

If you already have all the accessories...throw them on and post some pics. You'll get better feedback that way.

***Looks like you have a great Swing scene in Bristol. Good for you!!!
