My Great Grandfather was in the Circus around 1922 to 1939. According to his accounts (before he passed away in 1964) many performers had to be able to do more than one act, in case someone needed to "fill in" for another performer.
He was normally a circus clown, but could do high wire walking, worked the booths that sold novelty items, and had to work with any animals in an act.
Next time I go up north, I will see if I can dig out any of the pictures we have of him, I would love to check out that book, they may have some pictures of him in it, perhaps?
