Years ago I stopped in a little tavern in "Little Havana" Miami, Florida. I was in a rum & Coke phase then and when I ordered same, it became obvious that no English was spoken there. I remembered to ask for it by the name, "Cuba Libre" and I added "dos" since I was with a friend. When the waitress returned she sat before us two tall water glasses more than half full of white rum (no ice) and then placed a carafe of chilled Coca-Cola in the middle of the table. The rest was Do-It-Yourself. :D

Fedoragent introduced me to Havana Club. It is hands down the best rum I've ever had period, full-stop, end of story!

Unfortunately we cannot get it in the US...

I also like the Havana Club 3y - rather light in it's taste but still my favourite for a Cuba Libre (maybe because of habit). But one can surely do without Havana Club and there are some excellent and affordable alternatives out there:

Cartavio Ron Silver from Peru - aromatic and stronger in taste than Havana Club but also very versatile and compatible with every cocktail.
Matusalem Platino from the Dominican Republic - rather special, very aromatic and sweet (and an eyecatcher).
Blue Bay White from Mauritius - very fruity and perfect in a daiquiri.
I don't drink much dark rum but the El Dorado 12y from Guyana and Appleton Estate Extra 12y from Jamaica neverd disappointed me :)

Funny enough...

It was FedoraGent who recommended the Havanna Club to me to try (knowing it was much easier to get in the UK). Once again, a great drink that I might never have discovered except for a pal in California recommending it!!
