My friend, Jim, lived a similar if somewhat less amazing story.

Back when he was in high school, Jim was poor kid. But he wanted a class ring more than anything he had ever wanted before. So he saved his pennies and, at the beginning of his senior year, ordered himself a large, gold, Balfour ring. When it arrived, it was a bit too large for him, but he wore it anyway thinking that he would eventually grow into it. He told me that ring was the most beautiful thing that he had ever owned, up to that point in his life, and he planned to wear it forever.

Only a few weeks later, Jim was bass fishing in an old mill pond when his beautiful, new ring slipped off his finger and disappeared deep beneath the tannin stained water. He thought it was gone forever, and it almost was.

But thirty-some years later Jim was driving by the old pond and noticed that the water level had dropped noticeably. Come to find out, the dam was no longer being maintained and had begun to crumble. Over the months, Jim kept an eye on the pond and when the water receded beyond where he thought he had lost his ring, he borrowed a metal detector and went looking. In less than ten minutes of searching, Jim and his 1975 class ring were reunited. He still wears it today...
