"The Black Leather Jacket auction pays homage to the 1986 Barneys New York Decorated Denim event, in which Barneys New York auctioned off customized denim jackets designed by prominent designers and artists to benefit an AIDS charity.

For this event, instead of denim jackets, Barneys New York asked select artists and designers to customize black leather motorcycle jackets. A total of 23 one-of-a-kind leather jackets were created by Azzedine Alaïa, Joseph Altuzarra, Susan Cianciolo, Dan Colen, Tim Coppens, Kim Gordon, Ella Kruglyanskaya, Helmut Lang, Glenn Ligon, Nate Lowman, Isabel Marant, Marilyn Minter, Dries Van Noten, Rob Pruitt, Ugo Rondinone, Sterling Ruby, Borna Sammak, Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci, Alexander Wang, Anicka Yi, and Lisa Yuskavage."

The following are a few of the custom jackets to be auctioned off (I am just the messenger):

Is there something wrong with me if I only know Givenchy and Alexander Wang from all those names?

Starting Bid: 1000$

In my opinion, and it is only my opinion, if I was going to auction something for a charity or bid on something that is going to cost me a lot of $$$ £££, I would like it to look like something high end. Most of the jackets look like £50 items from TKMaxx(TQMaxx?) with not much effort put in apart from..... no I can't see a decent item among them.
The first looks like a poor effort by a backpacker who never actually backpacked. The NO WAR, a complete waste of time. Finally, the final jacket, thats a great idea for a do it yourself 'Grizzly' Even someone as talentless as Tracy Emin could design something like this.
Someone will probably bid on them, maybe it would be worth checking the dustbins later when the buyers look at what they have bought.

It's a shame really, because the cause certainly warrants more effort. What might be cool with these jackets is to ball them all up, feed them through a wood chipper and ...

I am a big fan of modern/contemporary art. That said, one of my gripes with some modern art is that there is no artistic skill reflected in the finished product -- a third grader could do it. The "No War" jacket is a perfect example of this. A complete waste of 90 seconds of artistic expression.

I remember better painted up leathers in the late 80's early 90's LA Rocker scene. Leathers and Treasures on Melrose was an awesome place to visit back then!

I think that is the link to the final objects that will remain of the last bit of human civilization in action, when all human resources of perspective energy intelligence and aesthetics had finally run out of gas shortly before actual real resource scarcity set in, the world fell in on itself, and humankind disappeared into the caves until the earth was reborn 400,000 years later.

These are fashion people doing these. Fashion people exist to not do anything good, lest they be judged.

I kinda like the Kim Gordon and Givenchy ones but everyone is right in that it's all been done before. Maybe coming up with some completely original jacket concept was nigh on impossible? The black leather 'biker' has been around so long that to be original couldn't happen at this point. Especially after punk, post punk and 80's LA rock were through with it?

I'm surprised nobody went the route of a British rocker jacket frrom thed Ace Cafe scene... maybe that's what the first one seeks to do. I'm broadly ignorant of contemporary fashion, so I can't comment on the names involved, but I'd assume some of them at least reflect signature elements of the respective designers' style? The one with what appear to be cartoon drawings of famous or archetypal wearers of the style is quite cute. I cant see me actually wearing any of them, but then that's not really the point. They're unique pieces by the names involved, which is what must give them value in fashionworld. I hope they raise a lot for the cause.
