Changing hat bands?

Just getting into the hat hobby and wondering if you can easily change a hat band, say from a wide ribbon to a narrow one or leather to narrow ribbon? If so, do you need to have the new one stitched on or glued? Do you just pick the color ribbon you want from the fabric dept or can you order hat ribbon? Just wondering as it seems an enticing modification to personalize a new hat.
