cedar wood as moth repellent?

How efficient have you folks actually found cedar in keeping the bugglies at bay? I'm thinking more along the lines of a hatstand or band block made from a solid piece of cedar, and used in the open, than a piece of wood or bag of shavings stored in a closed container. Obviously for it to have any real effect it would have to be unfinished, or possibly finished with a simple wax or oil finish rather than a coat of polyurethane, which would seal in the cedar oils.

Are there any bad effects of having unfinished cedar in contact with a hat? Stains or color transfer? Opinions?

The stuff that repels the critters is the oils in the wood.
I use cedar but not touching my hats. Not sure wood shaped into a block band has enough oils to be effective.
I put cedar balls/pouches in hat boxes with lids but make sure they can't touch the hat anywhere.

A baseball bat in cedar, if you can hit the little beasts(?) It may be a little expensive in TV-sets, vases and coffee cups, though
