Don't know if this belongs with music, or video, or what. But anyhow, I HATE Western Swing but LOVE Carolina Shag. Go figure. Nothing personal.

I have taken shag lessons in years past, and love that style of dance. It is such an exuberant display! I love BEACH MUSIC! I lived on the coast of North Carolina for 27 years when I was in the Marines and for years after.

I love watching people Shag. I'm a lindyhop/collegiate shag/balboa junkie from years ago, but there is just something about Carolina Shag that I LOVE!! Too bad my hubby is a country two-step dancer.

Is this a choreographed number, or a free dance? I love how she glides. Her shoulders stay at the same level, and it just looks so fluid. He's flashy, but he couldn't be flashy if she weren't his anchor.

How do you folks feel about West Coast Swing? It's so similar, but I really find it boring to watch.

WCS *is* boring! All in the slot, and lotsa body rolls. Yuck.

I grew up on the NC coast and well remember seeing my older cousins shagging at the Pavilion...a club over on Atlantic Beach. That would have been in the mid 'sixties. The music playing would have probably been the Drifters or the Embers.

I still think The Shag is the only dance that half-intoxicated, fat, white men can do without looking like complete dorks. But you gotta be wearing a faded polo shirt, old khakis and Bass Weejuns with no socks…and you gotta be holding your honey with your right hand and a cold Bud in your left.

GAWD, here I am at 50 and NOW I find out there's a style of dance I'm supposed to be able to do. My memory of college and dancing is that all males who danced were more than half drunk, we still didn't think we could dance, it's just we didn't care so much anymore.
