Can I find an Akubra that looks like this?

Hi all! I've been lurking here for about a month, originally I stumbled across the site looking for an Indy hat and liked what I saw. A little introduction: I'm a 24 year old ex-Army college student who wanted to be Indiana Jones as a kid and never really grew out of it. I've never had a fedora as an adult but after looking at all of your collections I think I want at least one. I stumbled across this one on Miller Hats sight and absolutely love the shape and color. The only problem is that the consensus here seems to be that modern Stetsons leave a lot to be desired quality-wise. Ideally I would get a custom made in that same style, but funds won't permit that. I'd be glad to spend $140 if I felt I'd be getting my money's worth, but that doesn't seem to be the case with Stetson. Does Akubra have any hats that could be modified to look like that? What do you call that brim style anyway? Thank you for any help you can give. :)

Have you looked at the lines at Hats Direct and David Morgan?

If you're looking for both a quality hat and a hat that can be easily made into a fairly accurate Indy fedora, then the Federation's the way to go. The David Morgan is pretty similar, but the ribbon is way off in color. In fact, the Federation was made pretty much to be an Indy and pre-WWII type fedora in the first place. There are other Akubras such as the campdraft that can also make excellent Indy fedoras, but if you're new to this, you should stick to the Fed or Fed Deluxe then.

Also if you're looking for more info about Indy type hats, you probably should go to Indygear's forum.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I like Indy style hats, and plan to get one of those too, but right now I just want a nice fedora and think the Stetson in the link in my first post looks great, but I'm worried about the quality. I'd like a hat that looks similar but is of higher quality than the Stetson.

You don't have to form the Federation as an Indy hat. Many folks here have the Fed because it's just an all in out great hat at a really great price. The modern Stetson would be inferior in quality and more expensive, so if you want an Indy-esque fedora, then it really is the Federation you want I think. Also, because the Fed comes open crowned, you can have a lot of freedom to make it look however you want.

Ironically, the hat you pointed out seems to be a turn down brim version of the Stetson Temple, which was formerly the officially licensed Indy hat hence the name (i.e. Temple of Doom). So in a sense, you'd also be getting an Indy hat if you got that one.

In general, I think a lot of people would agree that the Federation is one of the best starter fedoras out there in terms of price and quality.

Hey Roadrunner- welcome to the lounge. The picture you linked looks a lot like an Akubra CEO. You might check that one out on HatsDirect or Everything Austrailian. Good luck

A lot of people have recently been singing the praises of the Akubra Sydney. Give a quick search of the posts on this site and you'll find pics and testimonials. It comes open crowned as well, I believe, and is available through David Morgan for a little more than 100 bones TT&L and delivers in about 5 days. I don't have one, but, as I said...

A different source for the Akubra Sydney is noggintops, on sale for 98 bucks, and there's a coupon code (SWEET20) that brings the price down to 78 bucks (good until Feb 15). I'd buy one but it looks too much like the Chrystie's Trilby my wife bought me at significant expense 20 yrs ago. I'm currently stretching it back to my size, but kind of wish I could just replace it with the Akubra instead - it seems like a really nice hat.
Cheers,
