It's not WWII, but I'm hoping that someone can identify this Canadian army beret patch and badge:

That's an American 'Green Beret' patch. The words on the pin mean 'To free the oppressed.'

ADDITIONAL: I want to say it's the 5th Special Forces Group. Their beret flash is black (Cite) but their oval insignia has the stripes.

It is 5th Special Forces Group. The confusion may come from the fact that back in the early days we did import our Berets from Canada. Looking at the sweat band and the way the flash is sewn on I would guess it's a mid to late 60's beret - if it still has the liner inside it can be worth some cash on ebay.

The flash (patch) on this Beret has the Vietnamese royal colors (yellow and red) added to signify the Vietnamese flag. In the mid 80's the yellow and red were removed and the flash was returned to the white and black that it started off as.

I collect Special Forces stuff and am an honorary member of Chapter 57 Special Forces Association ( http://www.chapter57SFA.org ) let me kow if you need any more info!

Big-time thanks for the info, guys - just goes to show how little I know about military insignia. I'd assumed it was Canadian because we don't see a lot of U.S. gear here on Vancouver Island (just old hippies who fled the draft back in the Vietnam era).

Here are some photos of the inside:
