I have recieved an email from Christopher Clarke Antiques advising me about an upcoming lecture on "Campaign Furniture" next month in London, just in case anyone is interested. (I have no connection with these people, other than being on their mailing list.

We are delighted that a LAPADA Director Sean Clarke is speaking at our 12th Annual Lecture. His talk titled Campaign Furniture will give an insight into the history and variety of British Campaign Furniture, its makers and the ingenuity of its design. It will also consider why the British used portable furniture to a far greater extent than any other country and the reasons for its demise. He is as you know an acknowledged expert on this subject, and it will be an interesting and authoritative talk. Displayed on this occasion will be perhaps the latest example of campaign furniture, The Rifle’s Mess Table by Richard Williams (awarded a Guild Mark for excellence) given by the Furniture Makers’ Company to the Regiment to celebrate its Bond of Association.
The other speaker is Paul Atterbury known to many of you from his frequent appearances on the BBC Antiques Road Show. His talk is titled The Gothic Revival, a study from its romantic origins in the 18th Century to its emergence as the style that shaped Victorian Britain. He is an acknowledged expert in this field.
The Foundation is indeed most fortunate to have two really interesting speakers, who have generously donated their time and expertise. Do come, bring some friends to enjoy a glass or two of wine and chat with furniture enthusiasts before the lecture, and be instructed and entertained by our speakers, and also perhaps join us for dinner afterwards..
The Reception in the India and Pakistan Hall at the Royal Overseas League is from 6 to 6.35pm, when the lectures start. First off is Sean Clarke followed by Paul Atterbury, and we finish between 8 and 8.10 pm. Afterwards our Annual Dinner has been arranged at the East India Club, St James’s Square, just 5 minutes walk away. The dinner is informal and will be over by 10, or at the very latest 10.15pm.
Tickets for the Reception and Lecture at the Royal Overseas League are £16 each.
Tickets for the Reception, Lecture and Dinner are £72 each.
