Brown or burgundy shoes with gray suit - how dark?

I'm intrigued by the wearing of brown/burgundy shoes with gray suits - I think I saw some of this in Public Enemies. My question is how dark a gray can you go? If someone has an example photo of this then I would love to see it?

Here is a pretty dark gray pair of pants with oxblood? shoes that looks ok to me.

IMNSHO, as dark as you want. Once you hit the charcoal/slate level of grey, I'm partial to burgundy/oxblood/cordovan over brown (in fact, I think it's a more versatile colour, period) but I don't see why anything that's identifiably grey of some sort can't (or shouldn't) be worn with either.

Grey with brown

I've a light grey pinstripe linen suit that I wear in the summer with either light tan or dark brown shoes: and when feeling extra louche, I wear it with mid-brown deck shoes. Brown works better than black for me as the latter would strike too formal a note with a more casual suit; and brown shoes wear cooler than black in the heat.

I"m sure there's a few Apparel Arts / Esquire images in support of this: I'll try to find them and post them. It's always useful to support your thesis with evidence! :)
