Brixton Hats, opinions

I was wondering what this learned and expert community thought of Brixton Hats. I know they are made in China and they are marketed especially towards the young public, but some of them are well made.

I have had for quite some time a Toyo Brixton Castor in tan color and I bought (and then returned because it was REALLY big ) a Brixton Las Cruces hard felt , taupe color, which wasn’t bad at all ( or so I thought when I briefly had it, because I returned), granted, this are not to be in the same quality category of American, Italian, English or German hats (in no particular order), but they can be very nice Hats for beginners or people whom have limited funds to invest when it comes to a hat. It would be very nice if they would pay a bit more attention for details. The las Cruces, for example, had a sweatband made of faux leather which, in my opinion, made it unnecessarily cheap. Opinions?

America makes plenty of low quality hats. Brixton is aimed at more of the fashion market than the hat aficionados. They are more trendy accessories made to be worn for a few seasons and replaced when fashions change. It’s rare that we see Brixton here on The Lounge, but I have one of their flat caps.

Brixton falls into the same category as other similar hats, and just don’t have the attributes that most of us look for. If you like them and they serve your needs than what else matters? Most of the hat wearing population are not members of The Lounge, and our preferences are not usually theirs. We represent a very small subset of hat wearers and we here don’t speak with one voice here either.

Folks that are really into denim will look at my Costco jeans and shake their heads: don’t he know about selvedge and raw denim made on old US looms in Japan? How can I be happy with my cheap made in China jeans? Some of it is snobbery, some of it is lack of education or funds, and some is a lack of interest. I don’t care if my Levi’s are not the best available. Some folks don’t care if their hats are the best available. They are functional and they like how they look and perform and that’s all that matters.

I will say that if you want a better built longer lasting hat you might look elsewhere, and maybe not even need to pay much more.

Well, yes, indeed, there is quality and there is quality. I thought that I did say these weren’t in the same league a many well known brands but rather more in the league of Jaxon’s hats.

Once upon a time, in the world of watch collection Russian or Chinese watches would have been an oddity but nowadays some sport, without too many problems those too. But I don’t expect to create many proselytes of the modern cheaper hats
over here.

I am very active on a saxophones forum and we’ve gone on for years about the Chinese Saxophones and while the/y are still frowned upon by most, the Taiwanese saxophones (once upon a time in the same group) are now well established a quantity and quality.

I have just bought, for kicks, a felt version of the Toyo above. I will give it a go. It won’t break the bank.

I don’t have any experience with them other than seeing them in stores. If it fulfills it’s “function” and you personally like the “form” then what else matters? You might not get bragging rights, but does that really matter.

It certainly doesn’t and I am not after bragging anyway
