Brim edges...what's the lowdown?

I'm just a neophyte hat lover who is looking to purchase my first fedora. I thoroughly enjoy hats, being the proud owner of a fine wool English driving cap and a beautiful winter Russian fur hat made from fox.

I have a question with regards to the edge of brims. I note some are simply "raw" (is that the right term?) and others have a ribbon or silk (?) sewn on the edge. What are the advantages or disadvantages of either, other than simply aesthetics.

I really enjoy the banter on this site...I think I'm addicted.

They're used as a way to "dress" up the edge of the brim, but they also serve the purpose of making the brim hold its shape better.

Generally the wider the binding, the more formal the hat. Narrow binding is more casual.

I like the bound edge with the wind trolley to me it makes the hat look more vintage. A touch of class to your fedora.
