Well, the one I posted that was local to me just shut down a couple of weeks ago. Though the sign says closed for renovations, it is, unless an investor comes along, going to close down permanently.

This news story gives the details. Shame, it was a nice little theater. My then-fiance-now-wife used to live in Bergen County and we used to take in a show there fairly often. At some point in the past they remodeled (remuddled?) the place to have 4 small screens. I often noticed that few customers patronized the snack bar, which is how exhibitors make the bulk of their money. I understand Louie's Charcoal Pit across the street is going out too.

Louie's is also gone. I wasn't very impressed with them the one time I visited but I guess they had been around for awhile.

The theater was getting a bit run down but was the cheapest option in the area and the clientele was generally older and more mature. It was nice to be able to watch a movie on the cheap without the groups of mall rats that hang out at most of the other theaters.

With both Louie's and the theater shutting down the whole Cedar Lane main street will definitely change.

The world is full of wise guys who think they're Sticking It To The Man when they smuggle their own snacks into a theatre, but when you do this at an indie house, it's no different from sticking your hand in the till and stealing from the people who are trying to keep the place in business. Don't do it. Yes, the concessions are expensive -- although usually less so than in chain theatres -- but if you want these kinds of theatres to be there when you want to see them, you better dig down and support them. I have no compunction whatever about confiscating contraband when I catch people bringing it in, and I tell them exactly why I'm doing it.

The subject theater, the Cedar Lane in Teaneck, NJ, just sold the standard popcorn and candy fare, and the popcorn looked like nothing special. The indie house that's local to me, the NARO, sells the usual stuff plus killer baked goods like oversized cookies and brownies/blondies. Getting a NARO blondie is part of the fun, and I suspect many single-screen houses have unique items to augment their snack offerings.

The owner of our local theatre has stated that he thought that he had got in the theatre business but the reality is that he is in the popcorn selling business. I happily support him each and every time I attend a showing with my purchase of an extra large popcorn.

I see this thread is really long already, i've watched this show since it started and i'm a big fan now, especially the subplot with Van Alden and O'Banion (i hope he gets more screen time next season). I did find last season to be the weakest so far, i know some wild things happened back in the 20s but it was a bit too over the top, rossetti was too crazy. While there were black gangsters with some influence in their own community i highly doubt Chalky and Pernsley would have been able to gun down those white people on the boardwalk in plain sight like that without incurring some major retaliation. And as has been said before, i think the sex is too much, frankly pornographic- and don't get me wrong if you are showing a scene in a brothel or something of the like i don't expect everyone to be dressed as quakers, but the story goes out of its way to show nudity and sexual fetishes. My only other gripe with the show is how every single person in the show nearly, is flawed seriously, to the point where all of them are sexual perverts, adulterers, murderers... and sure, we all know folks in the 1920s weren't all squeaky clean, especially in the underworld the show examines... but by in large the 1920s were a far more conservative period than today, and the excess of that period certainly didn't extend beyond certain social circles and cliques, it did not permeate the whole society! If the show had say, one moral center who was good or decent, it would work better, even if they'd seem out of place. Van Alden seemed that way at first but then he went completely off the wall. I thought Margaret Schroeder was, but my impression is more that she thinks she's good rather than that she is.

One last gripe.. why does no one wear summer suits? We'll see scenes of them in summer and they are all still in wool three pieces and fur felt hats.. only rarely do we see straw.. would i be wrong to think this was inaccurate?

But all that aside, i am hooked on the show, at times it certainly appears to be a guilty pleasure, but its engaging enough. I hope the show lasts long enough to go places with O'Banion, Hymie Weiss, and of course, Masseria in new york.

Oh yeah and i almost forgot, we never found out if Agent Ziwicky (sp?) survived the trip to Masseria? I think i'm the only person who actually cares about his fate both in the show and in real life.. oh well. Maybe he went out and bought a personality.

It picked up a bit half way through but it seems most of season 3 consists of either:
(1) Very contrieved conflict/arguement scenes between characters to have "tension" even when a particular episode doesn't actually have much story.

(2) Having Gyp Rossati just channel Joe Pesky from either Good Fellas or Casino and beating someone to death. I was waiting for him to ask when he was wearing Wayne's hat, "Do I look like a general to you?" before beating one of his men to death with an object. What a tiresome character...

I liked some parts of season three, but i did find rossetti to be a bit much at times, as i said, he behaved in a way that would have gotten a real gangster killed very quickly. He was, but we all knew it was happening, while last season's finale with Darmody had far more impact since it wasn't a sure shot, and there was a build up over two seasons that led to it. Also (*****SPOILER******)i don't really find nucky going rambo towards the end believable, or richard. As much as i like richard, he's a sniper lets remember, not the kind of guy who runs into a room full of guys shooting without taking cover and somehow offing everyone. While i know its TV i like my shows that are rooted in reality to not stray from it too much. they could have had richard snipe folks and shoot one or two at the end and i would have been fine with it.

Me, I've just come to accept that. I enjoy it while I'm watching it and then, later, I can laugh at its absurdity and my own liking of it.

Oh i know i'm nitpicking, can't help it.. its not going to stop me from watching the show, i just hope it really puts some of those "real life" stories into full gear, like the o'banion/capone one, and perhaps give us a taste of whats really going on in NY. I was really surprised this season didn't end with some Tea Pot Dome scandal as a plot point, i was sure it would happen and knock out Nucky's legal troubles with Harding's death (the show is right now in 1923.. so it would make sense). I'm looking forward to next season to be sure !

Isn't Dutch Shulz due to arrive on the scene about now? He was a WWI vet who worked his way up to be Rothsteins bodyguard if I recall directly who then ran afoul of the Luciano's original Syndicate.

I was going to mention dutch schultz too, they could introduce him the way they did ben siegel and hymie weiss, starting as throw away side characters to be used if the series is renewed a few more times.
