Best Mascara (for vintage looks)?

So girls, what is your favorite mascara, especially for vintage looks? I've been trying several but haven't found one I'm thrilled enough with to repurchase.

On another note, I am very sad that Besame quit making their 1930s Gingerbread Mascara before I got a chance to try it. (Anyone have a new tube they want to part with?)

I have tried cake mascaras -- very vintage in thought, but not what I'm used to compared to modern formulas. Usually the mascara is to thin and wet and I end up with spiky, stiff lashes.

I'm a big fan of CoverGirl Lashblast in Dark Brown. It's not very vintage at all in terms of packaging, unfortunately, but it makes my lashes sooo long. I tend to get clumpy lash syndrome very easily, but the Lashblast has a big brush that really separates each lash.

I'm so cheap with my mascara. I used to get the same one as you RodeoRose, whcih was really nice and made my lashes look longer. But last time I just grabbed the cheapest one, I think its Covergirl too, but it's just a skinny blue bottle. It does the trick though, and when I get a job again maybe I'll go back to Covergirl Lashblast.

It may seem silly to spend money on mascara, but I love DiorShow Waterproof mascara. I've tried so many different brands and wands and I get so much more use out of one bottle of this stuff since other cheaper brands seem to dry out on me faster and they go on wither too cakey and sticky or to thin. The formulation makes the perfect thick long lashes, and I have these short Asian girl lashes. And it's really waterproof to the point of making it difficult to remove, so it stands up to anything from 100% humidity to rain.

I like Clinique's Lash Power Mascara Long-Wearing Formula. It doesn't give me the freaky-spider eyes, doesn't run, doesn't smudge, doesn't come off with tears. Best part - it doesn't irritate my eyes at all! It's subtle too, so (in my opinion) it's perfect for my vintage look.

i use maybelline colossal... it's not too expensive but still seems to work better on my short lashes than the super chepa stuff. i have to be careful about not applying too many coats since it tends to get clumpy, but my lashes do get some length and flutter.

I just bought the new Falsies mascara by Maybeline. I really like it! Almost to the point that I'm thinking it makes my lashes TOO long, as I'm not used to it, lol!
The brush is different and separates well. It's not very thick tho, still takes two coats as all that I've tried.

I use Suncoat mascara. It has an all natural sugar-based formula. I wouldn't say it is the best mascara but it doesn't make my eyelids swell up (I have a slight chemical sensitivity...) so it is my favourite mascara at the moment! It works pretty well for vintage looks too

i've had that one too and it was really good indeed! i think i'll get it again since the colossal just doesn't do the same, unless i thoroughly curl my lashes first.

I too was a big fan of Besame's Gingerbread 1930s mascara. The closest dupe I've found is Aveda's Mascara Plus Rose: http://www.aveda.com/product/CATEGORY10575/PROD6062/Makeup/Eyes/index.tmpl It has a nice rose scent and applies very, very similarly to the Besame. It gives a "natural, but better" look that goes great with vintage styles. It is also less expensive than the Besame. I'd really recommend trying it if you liked the Besame Gingerbread. It says on their site it is only available in salons & stores, so perhaps it is also discontinued.

For vintage style, I like something that gives length & definition - not so much fullness or volume. I also don't like anything with a bunch of fibers in it, or that is flaky. I previously used Diorshow, which gave me amazing false-like lashes, but I had a bad reaction (itching, swelling, redness) and had to stop using it. I've never reacted to any mascara before in my life, but apparently it is somewhat common with their formula. I was pretty disappointed.

Right now I'm using Lancome Definicils and am VERY happy with it! It gives a fair amount of length and awesome definition. I'm using the dark brown.

I was a big fan of Maybelline Full'n Soft until it got discontinued in Europe I tried tons of other ones, including Diorshow (I still regret every penny I spent on that) and then I found Maybelline Great Lash waterproof, which I also like. Recently someone gave me Maybelline Volum' Express Falsies and I am really impressed. I have to say that I curl my lashes though (not that vintage I think) and lots of mascaras tend to uncurl them after application, so I'm pleased when I find one I like that also keeps the curl in.

I use bourjois mascara for sensitive eyes (comes in a white bottle)which makes nice and full and doesn't clump at all I find, I have heard people say that after a while bourjois mascaras clump awfully. Before that I used eyeko which was great for volume and length but it clumped a bit but it's not a problem if you use an eyelash brush afterwards (I use the one which looks like a mascara wand).

My favorite is Diorshow Iconic. I have long, light eyelashes that are not only stick-straight, but slant *down.* Iconic is the only mascara I've found that actually lifts them up! I really want to try Armani's Eyes to Kill though, as I've read rave reviews for it.

I purchased Maybelline's Falsies yesterday, and I love it!

The brush is like a spoon (turned sideways) where the bristles only appear on the top of the wand. It is not like a typical wand that you "comb" your lashes. It is more like "gliding" the wand over your lashes if that makes sense. I wante to use the bristles, but decided to follow the directions on how to use the wand. Reading the directions on how to use it helped

It does a fantastic job of enlogating my eyes as the ends of the lashes look like I have on a pair of the half falsies.

I only just read about this mascara in a mascara review for other women with lousy Asian lashes like mine (short, downward slanted, straight, coarse, sparse) and I was really looking forward to trying it so I'm feeling gutted right now. I've been doing okay with Rimmel GlamEyes (copper/rose gold cap) for a year now, gone through two tubes but wanted to try the SexyCurves wp which was an awful disappointment and I've just chucked it.

Right now GlamEyes is around 40% off in Matas so I'll probably buy two tubes but I'm feeling the itch to buy a tube of Maybelline Falsies right now. I can't afford the Lancome, Chanel and YSL mascaras usually recommended for my type of lashes.

length and volume mascaras usually give the best vintage look with my lashes provided I use a lash curler first or after mascara has completely dried. I usually forget to use the lash curler first.

ohairas, I'm feeling optimistic about Maybelline Falsies even though I imagine we have very different types of lashes but if you feel your lashes are too long then perhaps there's still hope for me.

Update - Just picked the SexyCurves out of the paperbin because I'm post-x-mas-broke and I can't imagine going for months on end without a mascara. Curled lashes first. The mascara has a toxic stink to it! It may or may not help to hold the curl but it looks better after using a curler first than on its own where it has no effect. The look is separated which I don't associate with vintage but what do I know...it takes forever to dry, the feel is dry and stiff and I'm not re-purchasing in 4-6 months time.

However, it's still more vintage on my lashes than my bare lashes alone. I'm actually able to reach the inner and outer lashes without smearing horribly. I won't recommend Rimmel SexyCurves wp though. I don't know if the none-wp version is less stinky and I don't know if it'll have any effect on any type of lashes.

Rimmel mascaras don't clump on me but I don't wait for each layer to dry either because that application form just doesn't work for me. Then even the most expensive mascara will clump on my lashes if I wait for each layer to dry.

If you're really broke and really desparate I'd recommend that you buy one of the three Rimmel GlamEyes mascaras before you even think of wasting precious little money on Rimmel SexyCurves. Don't expect a spectacular false lash vintage look of either mascara, curled or not.

I've tried both Sexy Curves non WP and Glam Eyes (Kohl black and regular black versions). Sexy Curves was rubbish for the price, from what I remember it was as though the brush was too firm to actually get hold of my lashes and comb the mascara through.

I think Glam Eyes is actually pretty good, I prefer the Kohl black one to the regular, but I don't wear it too often now as it looks a bit stark for vintage looks. Have you tried Maybelline's Define a Lash mascaras? They are normally about the same price as Rimmel, but I often pick them up on Ebay for less than half the RRP. There are two kinds, one for definition and length and the other for volume and definition. Normally go for the latter but I might try the other one soon.

Edit: I would say that that Maybelline mascara is probably the best one I've ever used, when I think about it. Not sure I would pay the full price for it - I tend to look for that and the Glam Eyes and just see which one is cheaper - but it really is very good.

I'm currently using a £1 mascara by MUA, for anyone in the UK- bought it just to see what brown mascara looks like on me, but found it surprisingly good for a bristle-brush mascara, especially one that cost a pound!

I absolutely agree with this statement. I love my Clinique mascara. I work in corrections so I need a mascara that will stand up to 16 hour days and physical violence. It gives me the staying power I need, the nonirritating formula my eyes beg for, and the vintage look I won't be without. I highly recommend it.

Right now im using Shiseido Perfect Mascara Defining Volume. I went with a freind to the store who was purchasing some cosmetics and the sales lady gave me a sample tube. I liked it so much that I spent the $22 for the full tube. I too have the straight downward lashes, so I always curl them before applying any mascara. The only problem was it is a bit hard to get off, so I just put ponds cold cream on my lashes and let it sit for a few minutes to break it down. Im sure you can go to any Shiseido dealer and ask for a sample tube.

Frenchy56, I don't think I've ever tried any Maybelline mascaras. I'd been considering Falsies but at that price I thought define-a-lash was for the lower and inner lashes only to be used with another mascara which sounded like an awful lot of trouble to me.
