Actually, Kokomo has been experiencing record low temps this last week.

Wind chill of 15 below last night in STL, with snow drifting due to high winds, which is very unusual around here. It's about 60 degrees in the house, and all the warmer it's going to get on a cold windy day...damn electric heat.

Closed schools for the third day in a row here - this time due to frigid temps. Wind chill of -35.

I just returned from Wisconsin, Sunday. It was four when I got onto the plane. When we landed at RDU, it was twenty. Damn cold by North Carolina standards, but feeling downright balmy after being in Milwaukee for a week.

Here I am about to hike across Little Muskego Lake on New Year's Day. For the first time in my life I saw people actually ice fishing. Darned fun, but kinda chilly to an old Reb like me.

Based on the amount of rain we had last summer (remember last summer?) I've been expecting a lot of snow here in New York. So far it's been pretty average. There was a nice storm right before Christmas, and a dusting on New Year's Eve. And there was another dusting here this morning (Jan. 8).
I'd say it's been good and wintry here, but not intolerable. The worst for me has been the wind, which blows through the gaps around my A/C in my west facing top floor window.
I do feel sorry for the folks in the UK. It's been a nightmare for them, mainly because of their inability to cope with the moderate (to most US folks) amount of snow they've had.
On the other hand, isn't Australia having another blistering summer? It's SOOO weird to imagine the other side of the world having opposite seasons to us!

You're right, especially considering the rain - but I'm always cold. So it feels much, much worse to me than it actually is. lol

Netherlands is not doing any better, lots of snow and is freezing cold to the point of last night was -11!!! i don't like cold neither running noses !!!

To amend my earlier comment... it is possible to wear an overcoat and fedora in 30 degree weather and get funny looks from a post college years frat boy wearing a sweatshirt, khaki shorts, and sneakers. [huh]

I'm taking a group of boy scouts camping in Rice Lake, Wisconsin next weekend. The last two times I've gone it's gotten down to -10F overnight. I hope it warms up a little by then.

I have one main thought and that is the poor little school children who have no school. Here in Arkansas as many places many depend on breakfast and/or lunches. We even have a back pack drive to send home on wknd.
We are at 3 degrees here and school is in but up in Fayetteville and north schools are all closed for a few days now. They have been at below 0 and wind chills about -20 or something.
anyway. praying for people to have food and warmth in this bitter winter.
I am used to hurricanes, not cold like this.

Ice fishing!

Talk about vintage winter activities! Ice fishing is the iciest! There's a webcam on a small lake in central New York State (Lake Waneta) that I often look at, and there was somebody out there today. It looked like the North Pole, and there was this little hut in the middle of the lake. You have to be a real Wisconsin, Minnesota, upstate New York, Northern New England type of person to enjoy it. About as exciting as watching paint dry. Chop a hole in the ice, plop a line down (don't really need more than about 1 foot of rod) and sit there and stare for hours in the freezing cold at a hole in the ice. Spine tingling! But I guess the sensation of a bite is what these guys live for. And coming home with a nice little pile of fresh frozen fish is not so bad, either.
