Are we too much more self-centered than previous generations? Has self-esteem turned into narcissism?

Seems to me, it boils down to, "as people become more self-reliant, they are less reliant on others". To me this is most obvious in male-female relationships: More people just don't see the need to rely on someone else "too much" (?), either for financial or emotional support, or for permanency in relationships. I personally still like entertaining the idea of marriage.
Thoughts? Is this an overall beneficial trend for society? Has it gone far enough, or should we keep down this path because it is Progress?
