Ebay's a good place to find a "rustic" looking hat, but personally I'd buy a new one that fits the look you want and then beat the living crap out of it "roving" as you say. That way you when you look back on that new/old beater in a few years you'll remember fondly how it got so worn out!

I did a search on Dock Boggz and Dillard chandler also to try to get the right style I was looking for.

I'm looking for something pre beat so I don't waste a nicer cap. A new cap just looks off with and under shirt and bibs.

It won't look so new if you throw it in a briar patch and then drag it through the dirt. After that, it will have that certain patina that goes with an undershirt and bibs quite well.

Thanks for the pictures and bringing this fine man to our attention. I'm a fan of traditional music of various sorts, but didn't know of him. Illumin8em, since the gent died of emphysema etc probably connected with coal mining, sure is easy to see why you'd be moved to pity by something in his "high lonesome" voice.

Back to hats...I have a Mallory Ten that is sort of in this camp. It's green, it doesn't look beat to heck but has a few stains and is so pliable that it never looks the same twice. So I guess what I'm saying is, eBay and look for decent quality but maybe thinner, cheaper hats (like the old $10 ones).
