I don't subscribe to the newsletter, but I visit Maltin's web site every few weeks to see what's new.
Back in 1982, I had the privilege of attending his final course on Hollywood Cartoons (which he had given for almost a decade) at the New School. Not so much a class as a gathering place for the then-still-small NYC cartoon-fan subculture, it was a marvelous experience! The level of expertise was remarkable for those pre-Internet days... Jerry Beck (a respected cartoon expert/author in his own right) was his teaching assistant, and it wasn't unusual to see film cans and videotapes being passed around among the "students."
I later corresponded with Maltin when (inspired by him) I was putting together my own cartoon course for the Learning Annex and I had some question about using black-market, copyright-violating film prints in an educational setting. (Alas, my course was a flop!)
