Hi everyone.
No, I haven't discovered a treasure trove of NOS hats. I just thought the title might make your heart skip a beat again, but this time, for me. Sorry to have led you on.
I've been lurking for about a year and a half now, which I think means that I have to register with the local sheriff and stay away from schools. I've learned quite a bit from many of you. I think Sharpetoys once wrote that a person goes through several stages of wearing hats. First are the cheap stingies on ebay, followed by more expensive stingies. Next are wider brim production hats, followed by expensive wide brimmed vintage and finally, by customs. Though he doesn't seem to post anymore, Sharpie had me pegged long ago. (I also really miss Marc Chevalier's postings.)
Though I started with a Royal Stetson Saxon in the late 90s, it was in the attic soon thereafter. Then I got the bug again. My starter stingies (a Herbert Johnson and a James Lock) and a (not so stingy) 3x OR are going back to ebay-land this weekend. My modern Borsalino has shrunk to a near point.
As a fully matured fedora-donner (read: nerd), I love my Stetson 7x (Dinerman is a wellspring of knowledge), my beater 60s thin ribbon Borsalino (if BK's dating system is correct), Stetson 25 (Mingo's collection rules), Stetson Vitafelt Playboy (courtesy of MK on ebay), my Panama Bob/Art, and my dress felt Art (the addiction set in the moment it arrived). I've finally joined in the fun because I couldn't resist the super sale that started this week.
So hello to everyone and, just to get it out of the way:
What's the best brand of hat?
What's ofas?
Does anyone know this guy on ebay who makes custom hats but hates Borsalino?
What's a good summer hat?
What makes one felt better than another?
Do I have to like Indiana Jones/vintage to wear a hat?
Those are all jokes. Come on people, I said I've been lurking for over a year. I know many of your sizes and where you vacation.
Oh, I almost missed the newest one.
Now...who am I supposed to call an AH?
Oh, right, the the second biggest guy on the site. The one who carries a gun for his job. I think I'll skip that part.
