Hi everyone.
No, I haven't discovered a treasure trove of NOS hats. I just thought the title might make your heart skip a beat again, but this time, for me. Sorry to have led you on.

I've been lurking for about a year and a half now, which I think means that I have to register with the local sheriff and stay away from schools. I've learned quite a bit from many of you. I think Sharpetoys once wrote that a person goes through several stages of wearing hats. First are the cheap stingies on ebay, followed by more expensive stingies. Next are wider brim production hats, followed by expensive wide brimmed vintage and finally, by customs. Though he doesn't seem to post anymore, Sharpie had me pegged long ago. (I also really miss Marc Chevalier's postings.)

Though I started with a Royal Stetson Saxon in the late 90s, it was in the attic soon thereafter. Then I got the bug again. My starter stingies (a Herbert Johnson and a James Lock) and a (not so stingy) 3x OR are going back to ebay-land this weekend. My modern Borsalino has shrunk to a near point.

As a fully matured fedora-donner (read: nerd), I love my Stetson 7x (Dinerman is a wellspring of knowledge), my beater 60s thin ribbon Borsalino (if BK's dating system is correct), Stetson 25 (Mingo's collection rules), Stetson Vitafelt Playboy (courtesy of MK on ebay), my Panama Bob/Art, and my dress felt Art (the addiction set in the moment it arrived). I've finally joined in the fun because I couldn't resist the super sale that started this week.

So hello to everyone and, just to get it out of the way:
What's the best brand of hat?
What's ofas?
Does anyone know this guy on ebay who makes custom hats but hates Borsalino?
What's a good summer hat?
What makes one felt better than another?
Do I have to like Indiana Jones/vintage to wear a hat?

Those are all jokes. Come on people, I said I've been lurking for over a year. I know many of your sizes and where you vacation.:p

Oh, I almost missed the newest one.
Now...who am I supposed to call an AH?
Oh, right, the the second biggest guy on the site. The one who carries a gun for his job. I think I'll skip that part. ;)

I think the only thing you forgot to ask was the best way to get the curl out of a homburg's brim. ;)

Welcome to the Forum, great first post. BTW what hat size are you? I need to know whether to hate you or like you. (At least until the great hat sale of 2008 is over.)

Ah, ya got me!

Hi,

Well, your little scheme worked. I saw the title and thought it was Johnny's thread, then noticed it was brand-new and then thought: How many attics full of hats can there possibly be??

So, I decided to read on.

Ya got me. :D

So, you've been lurking *and* run the gamut and *then* posted? Hmmm. Seems backwards to me! I did it the other way around!

Although, I skipped the stingies. I start at 2 1/2" and go up to 3" on the brims, and I like the 2 3/4" the best. I think I got up to a dozen hats before I gave up and went for a custom. Now I have custom #2 in-process and will probably send one of my favorites off of eBay out to become custom #3 with custom #4 taking shape in my mind.

I have to admit to failing in the photo dept. as well, so you are not alone. I have all this nice camera equipment, even a modest studio, and photo processing and printing gear - and not a single shot is online anywhere.

It's not the photo part, nor finding an on-line photo host, or even laziness on my part. It's the bandwidth to get even VGA sized images uploaded. I live in a rural area, with only dial-up and that runs at - get this - a max speed of 26kbps. My only hope for a higher speed is to get a satellite system and those cost too much. Still.

I read this site with the images turned off it's so bad. I have to manually select to display each image. Sheesh. I keep hoping for something like Clearwire to come along, or even the higher speed cell system options, but so far no go.

Oh, well. Enough whining about that. Welcome! That's what I was gonna say when I hit 'reply'! :p

Later!

Stan

Welcome aboard!

Best brand of Hat: Well, that's subject to opinion. And, just like ---h----, everyone has one. Best thing I could say as an answer is whatever hat you like the best!

OFAS - Our Favorite Auction Site (aka Ebay)

The guy who sells/hates Borso's? A person we don't speak about here. Personally, I wouldn't deal with him. I'll leave it at that.

Summer hat? I prefer a Milan straw over a Panama. The newer, plastic crap, hats I try to avoid and rely on vintage. BUT, Biltmore did make a nice REAL Milan straw this year. It's a pretty penny (100 bucks), but I like it.

Felt? Haven't a clue.

Indy/Vintage? Well, I like Indy, but I can't pull off one his hats! As for vintage, dude, whatever floats your boat! It works for me.

Have fun!

Thanks for all of the kind greetings.

Scotrace, it was you who reminded me of Stitches in Time. I had purchased an old Ronson cigarette case/lighter from them years and years ago, but had forgotten about the shop. After you posted about them, my wife and I took the drive out and saw that your name was just above ours on the guest book.
By the way, if you didn't have the opportunity to go up in the attic, be sure to make another visit. While the showroom has a nice display, the attic is where the hundreds of hats (and everything else) can be found. I spent over an hour up there, getting very hot and dirty, looking through all of the amazing, but 6 7/8 and/or moth eaten, hats before finding my first 3x in 7 1/2. For anyone who's interested in the store, but can't make the drive (or trans-oceanic flight), the store sells on ebay under the name ddking.

I SO saw that coming, and I SO knew it would be from you. :)

From my lurking, I'm pretty sure I need around 15 (or was it 20) posts before I can post photos. This may have changed, and I haven't read up on all of the rules and procedures just yet. Also, I've got to set up a flickr account, and probably go through some of the initial trial and error that new members frequently experience.

You're not going to get Weegee or BrandX quality photos, but I can look just as stoic in a handheld shot as Douglas. ;)

Come on, Mr. Lucky, everyone knows the answers are:
Borsalino
Ebay
He who shall not be named
The one Madonna wears
Beaver (or was it hare, or maybe a blend, or...)
and
Yes.
;)

Then I guess I better get it in gear.

Here's another procedural question:

The email address I've used to sign up isn't mine alone and I don't have access to another paid address. I know that if I try to use my gmail account as my "official" email account, my FL account is deleted. So, is there any way to indicate that pm's should go to my gmail account, rather than the one I have on file with the Lounge?[huh]
