Akubra Snowy River?

Thinking about having another hat made, this time not neccessarily custom-built but rather probably custom re-bashed at some point in time. I was thinking about going with a Snowy River, because I like the medium sort of color and the teardrop bash. I really just am wondering if there might be any input on this hat from the members here... I have one Akubra (a third-owner Military-style that from what I've gathered isn't exactly brand new) and the felt is pretty stiff and thin... I am looking more for something a tad bit thicker and definately floppier.

I know this is vague, but does anybody have any information or experience concerning this particular hat at all?

I have 2 Snowy Rivers a Black and a Fawn (light brown) and the Felt is not only pretty thick it's quite stiff, similar to a Stetson or Resistol Cowboy hat. Bob.

I have a white Snowy River. It is a beautiful hat, probably looks better on me than most of my other hats.

However, it is more like a cowboy hat, and it is quite stiff. I suppose one could soften it up, though. Wonder what it would look like?

I have a six year old snowy river in santone fawn from Hatsdirect. It starts off really stiff like a cowboy hat but will soften up with use. Rain storms help with that as well. It is also thicker quality felt then the "Military". Lately I have been eyeing everythingaustralian because the prices are cheaper then Hatsdirect. I think I may give them a go for my next Akubra purchase.
Hope that helps.

That helps a lot Johnny.

Everything Australian is generally cheaper than HatsDirect, but I might go with David Morgan. Much cheaper shipping. Have to crunch some numbers now.

I'm waiting on an Akubra Casual in Regency Fawn, an Akubra Stylemaster in Moonstone Grey (Open Crown), and an Akubra Sydney Fedora in Tanbark Brown (Open Crown) from Aussie Bush Hats & Oilskins. They were the cheapest. They were all indent orders but should be ready this month. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

As I've mentioned before, I had two good Akubra-purchase experiences with Aussie Bush Hats and Oilskins this year. I did have to wait almost three months on my Stockman because the Glen Grey wasn't a standard stock color. But my Cattleman (in Sand) arrived about two weeks after I ordered it. For the price (each cost around $73 plus $14 shipping, the exchange rates are always changing), I can't complain at all!

I have had 3 Snowy River hats in Fawn. They do get soft with exposure to weather and elements. My first one was about 15 years ago and has long since been discarded. They really do look sharp and have real style. Now, the down side. If you do wear them a lot and expose them to sun and rain they will turn (get ready) to what I described earlier as Peptopink. BUT, that is with much wearing and abuse. The felt also thickens or swells up and the hat WILL shrink. This is my experience going back a few years. Would I buy another one? Just did about 1 year ago. Purchased from Everything Australian.

I had three Snowy River hats in fawn, black and gray. Had them for about 16 years. They do get soft with use, and the gray and fawn hats did lighten up with exposure to the sun over time. But I have never noticed a trace of pink in any of my Akubras which have come to 16 hats over the years, not even my fawn Snowy River which had been dunked in the river several times and was soft as any hat I've ever owned. Maybe there is a difference with felt lots.

The Snowy River has a bit of a low crown if you prefer that. And I learned the hard way that repeated steaming will cause it to taper.

Not really a Snowy River hat question but figured I'd get some eyes from our Oz Loungers....just watched the movie again & noticed a leather pouch/bag on Jim Craig's belt. I've searched the web but can't find any bag that looked like his. Called a possibles bag or ammo pouch for similar looking leather belt bags. Anybody know what he is sporting for that period of Aussie history? Still made & worn by drovers? TIA
