I'm getting a Gatsby made and the choice of linen is a yellow or a natural (see pics).
The natural is a bit more weightier (apparently), but both shape well. I'm going to be wearing my white/off white DB Palm Beach to a 'do' and also playing some raquet sports, so I'm leaning towards the 'natural.'

Any advice, suggestions?

Also, for a 30's event...do I need a fuller cut of fabric on the Gatsby to the normal B!Wear size?? or will the normal size pass muster (**I appreciate that 'I can be' a MUPPET sometimes, but I don't want to be looking like the Swedish Chef from the Muppets!! haha).

Standard B! Wear size (below):

As a fellow cap connoisseur (not really an expert though :( ), I say go with natural. Without the yellow undertones it may be a bit more versatile. And if it truly is a bit more substantial this may be good for longevity and durability, as well.

Unfortunately, I cannot help you on the depth of cut for B!Wear.

Hi Paddy,

As to colours, I like the natural better, although the yellowish one would offer more contrast with the white jacket you mention, so take it into account.

I do not own a B-Wear, but you should think that a large crown cap will look larger when combined with summer clothes, which are less bulkier than other seasons's. A more limited crown may well look more proportionate; B!Wear caps are made to order, so probably they can customize these particulars.

Regards!

Thanks for the feedback gents!

1. I'm going to go with the the natural linen.

2. The 'standard' size that B!Wear does (as shown in the photo 'above' of me in the brown herringbone) sounds like it will be large enough as far as cloth drape is concerned for a 1930's look).

Thanks (y muchas gracias por todos) my friends! Paddy.

I think fustian would be a bit better for a Palm Beach repro. Since the fabric they used for Palm Beach suit was pretty unique with it's blends, Linen alone doesn't give that same ... well smoothness and lustre. though if you are going for the full Gatsby look I'd say the lighter cream, though I think you look better in the darker one.

I myself Have always been partial to that oatmeal look for summer, something that looks very Out Of Africa and looks like it can take a tumble. I can't wait to see your new suit.

I like the natural lighter color. The yellow looks kind of tan, which is just a tan suit. . But to go out on a limb, have you considered a medium weight, off white wool or even rayon, or maybe gaberdine. if i were making a suit, that is what I would do. Summery day suit when needed, but also flashy nighttime suit.

Chaps...it's a Gatsby hat/cap (hence the Hat Room)

I think some of you are under the misunderstanding that it's a suit I'm going for. No, it's the Gatsby/Newsboy cap/hat from B!Wear.;)

Paddy, I think you're making the right choice going with the natural (for the first one, at least ;) ). The yellow does have something of a cool Dick Tracey look to it, but the much more neutral tones of the natural will gi ve it a better 'fit' with a much wider range of wardrobe, IMO.

FWIW, if you're looking at alternative sources within the UK, www.classic-caps.co.uk have a couple of very nice looking linen Gatsbys. It'd be hard to be B-Wear, though, for quality and style.

Gone with Brett.

Just come through, with extra cut of fabric. Very 20's - 30's. Taken the water spray bottle to it as it needs shaping (years of beret shaping has its' uses!). It's going to look 'so sharp' with the Palm Beach and my linen suit.

Brett (B!Wear) has done me proud folks, and 'very' easy to work with and will take into consideration personal requests. Oh, the light tan leather sweat is beautiful (and practical).

Hi Paddy,

Of course, worthlesswithoutpics , but you already know and will provide for it ;)

Please give details on the modifications you had done on the basic B!Wear cap; the shaping procedure will be most interesting too.

Regards!

(PICS) "White Mischief!!" Gatsby 1930's cap by Brett at BWear.

Constructed from natural linen, this eight panel Gatsby/Newsboy cap has a slightly fuller cut to the normal BWear offering. Lined in gold satin with a tan soft leather sweat-band, this is a beautiful addition to Brett's collection and is a 'must' for the Summer Season!! ;)

Looks great with a Palm Beach DB or SB, or your old College blazer! Echoes of F.Scott Fitzgerald and Evelyn Waugh abound in this classic cap.

When it comes in the post 'brand new,' I felt that there is a danger of looking like the chef out of the Muppets with the cap 'mushrooming' upon one's head!!

So...personally, I felt it needed shaping. As it's linen it responds well to a light spray of water until damp, and then shape it on your head. Once required shape is achieved, lift off head very carefully to preserve the shape, and then set down to dry naturally - et VOILA! One GREAT looking 30's style cap!!

***BEWARE***Clicking on images will bring up a LARGE hi-resolution photo.
