A quick question

I recently acquired a 1940s double breasted suit. Please excuse my ignorance, but should the bottom button be buttoned, or left unbuttoned? Or does it depend on the suit? I can post a picture if need be I think.

Thanks! :)

It's a matter of your own aesthetic preference and comfort. From the mid 1800s to the 1960s, the bottom button was almost always buttoned. From the 1970s to today, it has been considered more elegant (and perhaps more comfortable) to leave the bottom button unbuttoned.
