I am expecting a friend round this afternoon and I've been baking cake.
One luscious coffee sponge and one fruit cake.

Coffee cake laid out nicely on one of my (single) vintage china plates, irreplaceable, one-off, never to be found again, discovered in a long-gone charity shop....
Fruit cake cooling in its tin on the shelf.

A crash from the kitchen.
I dash in expecting to see guilty paws of a feline variety on the worktop but no, what I see is a fruit cake smashed in half lying in a pool of coffee icing, and a tin rolling on the floor.... and a plate of enormous sentimental value missing a giant bite-shape.
(NB the cats were all outside on this occasion and are entirely blameless. Complete mystery. Plate can probably be glued back together, but....)

So, what's your household tragedy of the day?

I came home late one night and my dog didn't greet me. On the floor was a box of cookies, intact, that I had gotten ready for mailing, and two broken figurines. I glued them back together and put them in a safer place.

I'd adopted my dog just a few months before and she'd been a lot of trouble. She almost went back to the pound over that.
