AUSTRALIAN survivors of the fall of Singapore 70 years ago have defended the behaviour of more than 20,000 Australian troops on the island, many of whom deserted.
''Morale was very bad … many of us had to leave our injured mates on the Malaya [now Malaysian] peninsula,'' says 89-year-old Roy Cornford, who has been accused of being one of the deserters, which he strongly denies.
