Last night I watched again 42nd. Street with Ginger Rogers movie from 1933. I was stunned by the beautiful costumes.
Really enjoyed the scene on the fake train with all the vintage lingerie and a dance number that had all the ladies with fur stoles with fox heads. Kept thinking except for the head this would make a beautiful wedding party.
I get so jealous when I see all the ladies with beautiful hats and gloves. I know some of you wear them and I have tons of both but I am limited.
Seems like our generation sort of got the short end of the stick some how.
The moderator of the movie stated this was the first time audiences saw Ginger Rogers.
I love these old movies as I do research.

I wish I'd had a chance to see that one again! I had it on a couple years ago when I was sewing. (Matter of fact, I was drafting the bodice for the green wool dress in the "Pricey Hobbies" thread!) I missed the beginning and wasn't able to pay much attention. To make it worse, I was just beginning to adore Dick Powell from the radio series "Richard Diamond," and didn't even realize he was before my eyes on the television. :eusa_doh:

Have you seen any other Busby Berkeley films? Out of the others I've seen I think Golddiggers of 1933 and Footlight Parade are my favorites. I like the pre-code ones best for their bits of risqueness, like with the dance number Pettin' in the Park. I love the hypnotic dance numbers, the costumes, and Dick Powell(especially)! His singing is divine and the characters he plays are just so darn likeable.

The Busby Berkeley boxed set released last year is an *excellent* investment -- 42nd Street, Gold Diggers of '33 and '35, Footlight Parade, and Dames, all in one package, along with shorts, cartoons, trailers, and assorted '30s fun!

We're going to be showing "Gold Diggers of '33" at the Strand this spring, for anyone in the New England area who'd like to come up for a swell show!

I love (and own) the movie on DVD but I LOVE the stage production, which has even more song and dance numbers because they took songs from other Busby Berkley musicals. And joy of joys, they've done a new production and it's on tour in 2007! I haven't seen it since I was about 10. I am SO excited! Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! lol

It's a really great movie. I saw a production of 42nd Street here in Galway about two years ago. If any UK and Ireland users here at the lounge are familiar with the TV show 'How to Solve a Problem Like Maria', then you may be interested to know that the female lead was played by Irish contestant Aofie Mulholland and she was very good!

But yes - a Broadway show about a Broadway show. Ingenious.
