Nice ones, Rick! I'm partial to the top in brown, but I actually like the ridiculous kiltie on the black pair. I think kilties are cool.

Fair enough. They just remind me too much of those high heel, lace up, goat-ropers (packer boots) that ya' see around here on the drugstore cowboys & wanna-bes. I am in the dark about their original purpose as well.

By "around here" do you mean the Lounge or your location? Embrace your inner (or outer for that matter) drugstore-ness. I grew up in Nebraska a number of years ago and also spent a good bit of time in Wyoming. I've met a handful of real cowboys, but I'm not one of them. I suspect none of them are perusing the Lounge.:D

According to Whites, my custom Semi Dress boots shipped out yesterday. I'm all the way across the country, so it will take a little over a week to deliver. Will post some pics as soon as they arrive.

I just got my ship notice! I'll have my boots next Thursday! Looks like we can do some unveiling together :)

Geographically, I mean.

Got these from ALDO a couple of months ago, they seem to be holding up well. Made in Italy. Dead ringers for Alden 405s at about 1/3 the cost, even at full price.

But then I got these ALDO's, for nothing, -10%, free shipping et al. Made in Portugal. I removed the ridiculous kiltie, replaced the round laces with flat & woven. And in the first week I had two 65+ y.o. Gentlemen ask me about them. One at the Barber's & one at the P.O. Both told me that they put them in mind of boots their G'fathers wore. So we are talking about men born in the end of the 19th century, or somewhat older, I would say.

Kilties had propose back prior to boot tongues being construction integral with the top of the boot. The kilties keep dirt and other matter out of the interior of the boot. With the tongue being constructed integral with the boot upper the kilties are now a manner of fashion and serve no propose like toe caps. I live in a valley between the lower San Francisco Bay area and the hills above the ocean coast. The guys I see wearing kilties are not working cowboys but are the boys raised in the hills between the bay area and the coast. They have a little old school mountain man attitude.

Informative post! Bravo. This is why I keep coming here, despite the nitwits. I knew that kilties must have, at one time, had a raison d'etre. Many thanks for pushing back the frontiers of my ignorance, which are both wide & deep. The more you know the more you know you don't know, as is said. :p

Does anyone have a good source for sub $200 boots available in wide width?
RM
I fell your pain. I am a 2 or 3 E myself. Lot of the dicounters sell high end like Alden shell and White's only carry D standard not made to order. I troll ebay with a lot of Patience. White’s sell their Factory mistakes on ebay. The Framer / rancher draw less attention than semi dress or smoke jumpers you might score around 2 bills never know next week or four years

Whacky, did you get yours yet?

Yeah, mine are waiting for me at home. Or at least I assume so. I have been on vacation for the better part of a week now. I'll be returning home in a few days and should be able to snap a few pictures for everyones viewing pleasure.

Cheers all, I bought these fro ALDO shoes. It is the DIANGELO model. Great boot, close to an Alden 405 Indy, but much less expensive, yet well made. Had my cobbler put on speed hooks, TOTAL cost, $111 ! Aldens would have cost me over 400. Hope this helps. http://img707.imageshack.us/f/img1278wy.jpg/

Dear Shiloh John,

Nice alternative to 405s with just some slight differences you work to correct. Well done.

Can you comment as to the accuracy of the European sizing and how comfortable to wear all day?

Sincerely,
Dave

Just got these Wolverine 1000 Mile Boot 721LTD in the mail today. They're made of shell cordovan and nearly broke the bank but damn they really are nice. Anyway, here are the pics. My cat, Jeremiah, was impressed and that's hard to do.
