So do you feel the stains will not come out? Over all how to you rate the hat?

Well, Jeff, if I had a hat block I might try soap and water, or vinegar, but I don't. Naptha was my best effort.

The hat itself lives up to its reputation. Felt quality is even better than my Borsalino Alessandria, a bit more dense and fine. Sweatband is fine, liner is nice. Its plastic crown cover has been removed.

If I ever score one of these in a 7 1/2, and in good shape, my hat search will be over.

Sad you have the problems with that hat. I used some K2R spot cleaning on one of my O.R. hats that had something like car crease on the front of the brim. After using the K2R on spots, it left the hat having a very spotty look all over the hat. I then noted the K2R itself was not totally being cleaned back out of the hat. I have tried sponges, brushing, slightly damp white washclothes, and even was about to call in a priest...when I finally decided that the hat just needs to go to a pro for cleaning and some minor repair (replacement of sweatband).

It was our week with *bay!! You're more experienced in these matters than I, but would it be worth discussing dyeing the hat with one of the hatters here? I've heard that the work can be done for a reasonable price, and perhaps it would be woth it!

I'm sorry the purchase didn't work out. I'm curious though, what kind of effect did the naptha bath have on the sweatband and liner? I've got a couple of hats that could use a naptha bath but I've been hesitant because of what it might do to the sweatband and liner. Of course the liner could be easily removed prior to the bath.

Landman, the naptha bath had no effects on the sweat or liner whatsoever. I read through the thread "Step by Step Naptha Bath" before trying it. As mentioned in there, someone had a bad outcome with a sweat, but it was an already compromised one. This one is still strong.

Tom, the redye plan might work . . . for the next owner.

This hat is still available. First, some clown with no purchase history ran the bidding up to find out his competition, then withdrew his bids. The runner up (auction winner) has failed to pay and doesn't respond to messages.

Tom, I talked to Blacksheep Hat Works, and they don't dye vintage felts due to shrinkage that occurs in the hot water bath they're subjected to. They claim it's pretty severe, maybe more than a couple of sizes.

Any interest here, let me know. I'll probably relist it in a few days. Who'd've thunk a Stetson 100 could be cursed?

Yes, with the flimsiest of excuses, too. Ebay provides a few boilerplate ones; the most commonly used is "I Entered the Wrong Amount." The party who did it to me entered $165, found out what the next highest bid was, waited 2 days, then retracted just before the 24-hours-left limit. It really ruins an auction.
