THE HISTORY

This Theatre has some interesting history use to be used for adult movies in the 70's and had a bit of a reputation. Prior to that:

"The Burbank Theatre opened in 1949, it was designed by the firm Cantin and Cantin of San Francisco. That firm also designed other theatres in and around the Bay Area. They designed the Coronet (1949-San Francisco), Colma (1949-San Francisco), Airport Drive-In (1949-Oakland), Studio (1949-San Jose), Crest (1949-Los Banos), Crest (1949-Sacramento), Laurel (1940-Oakland), Carmel (1938-Carmel), Ritz (1937-Stockton), Senator (1926-Oakland). Their company was founded in 1901. "

THE STORY:

In my ongoing efforts to find a 'special' book case I embarked on an amazing journey! I was in San Jose, CA going to my favorite Vintage knick-knack store on South Bascom, SJ but they already had closed. I noted some furniture at a thrift shop down the street near the Burbank Theatre. The owner of the thrift store also owns the old theatre and he brought me in to show me some other furniture stored inside.

It was like walking into the gates of heaven. The place has been used for storage for 9-years but it was amazing to be able to walk inside. The seats long removed leaving a large vacant space...my voice echoed in the theatre. I asked if I could take photos he said no. I was determined to keep in touch with him about the future of the theatre and my hopes of preservation.

We talked further and he showed me the entire building and described the difficulties he has been having with the county related to the building. They have had him jumping thru ongoing hoops. He has invested a lot of money in the property already. The upstairs is a totally modern tv/film studio with equipment/and ability to broadcast around the world, as well as editing gear. He has been doing a Muslim broadcast with HDTV (he is Muslim).

He wants to open the downstairs to the public for event and movies. He says he is not limited by money but by the county at this point. I believe with enough effort from supporters the county may be open to what this can provide the area.

CALL TO ACTION

I have a vision and I want to support this man and help preserve a piece of history. I am going to need help. I want to establish a task force and figure that some of you may have been involved in preservation efforts across the country? If so, I would like your support?!
