This is an unbelievable pair of New Old Stock Wolverine boots in shell horsehide. I am no boot expert, but I would guess from the shape and the sole, that these are probably from the 1940’s or the 50’s at the latest.
Leather is thick and supple, still giving off that wonderful smell of waxed leather – nice russet color with no flaws – these have apparently never been laced. The hooks and eyelets are painted with brown enamel, and the soles do not even show any “shop wear” – Soles are sturdily stitched and nailed all the way around. All embossing is beautifully sharp – marked “Wolverine Shell Horse Hide Shoes” and “Goodyear Wing Foot, Made in USA” – sole is 4 ¼” at widest point and 12” heel to toe. No wear, loose stitching, stains, smells (except LEATHER) - these look as sound as the day they were made!
They are accurately marked inside as a size 9. I wear 9E, and can get them on effortlessly, but have not laced them up or walked around in them. Nice, narrow welt and cut of sole make the feet look slim and elegant – something seldom ever seen in modern dress shoes – much less work or sport footwear.
