1902 Fedora--Yikes!

Here's an ad from a 1902 Sears catalog for men's hats. Look at the style of the "fedora" at that time. Also notice that the dreaded WOOL fedora was also available. I think I prefer the 30s thru early 50s style of fedora the best.

"American Rag Cie" (remember them, Root?) used to sell some pretty authentic repros of those homburgs. In fact, they used to sell good repros of lots of Golden Era stuff, too: shoes, hats, cigarette cases, etc. Wonder what happened?

Oh my, American Rag Co.... they did have some cool stuff! In fact, their store was really cool! I recall the first time I went in there... they had some really cool vintage clothes! Lots of pants and lots of suits! They had cool vintage display cases and remember the cool vintage art work on the walls from department stores? Man, that place used to be so cool!!!

They had amazing clothing mannequins that were copies of French ones from the 1930s. The male mannequins had heads that looked like "Fernandel", a horsefaced comedian from '30s French movies.

Those mannequins are now gone. Today's "American Rag Cie" is full of stuff that few of us would like to have.

WOOL HATS

It's interesting to see that wool hats were around a lot longer that we all thought . I garantee that a wool hat from 1900 was a lot better that todays garbage. I doubt that any survive today . It's rare to find any hats from before the 1920's with the exception of derbies and top hats because they were very soft . After a period of time , the hats start to dry out especialy the leather s .

And the wool, especially damp wool, got eaten to pieces by moths. Hats didn't usually live in cedar chests.

The way the hats are worn. I see it again and again in old illustrations. Did men really wear their hats perched so high on their heads? Mine almost brush my ears.

In the Civil War era, a version of them was called the "slouch hat".

It's an interesting look, that Victorian style... back then, the style was to be very prim and proper... to be delicate and tidy... Men were to have perfect posture, and tip their hats to ladies. A hat was to just top your head, not really cover it as they did in later years. Illustrations do vary from the actual person wearing such styles but, they were close.
