    Transitioning to dresses

Well, it depends on what you mean by "physically demanding". I work with power tools and/or caustic chemicals- many vintage skirts are simply not an option for me at work. I need to be able to operate foot controls at knee height, so straight skirts are too confining and full skirts are a...

Show us your vintage knitting and crochet!

I think you're right about it being fingering weight. I have this pattern, which also calls for that yarn, and the gauge is 7st/in on #3 needles (probably old needle sizes). So anything with a ballband gauge of around 7st/in on 3mm needles (modern US size 2) should be close. Baby Ull is a...

    The Pinup Thread

Whoo, those are some awesome zebra boots! Now that it's 2010, the 70's are almost officially "vintage", right? ;)

    Beauty Complaints

Here's my beauty complaint- my head is too big for off-the-rack wigs! So I can't even resort to that! I love the idea of being able to have short hair just for a while, but no dice unless I want to shell out real money for a custom size. &%^#! giant melon-head.

What's on Top - Bras, panties, garter belts, slips, & stockings

The elusive 32C The regular Playtex 18-hour does come in 32C, only in white though, and not all retailers will stock the size. It's very comfortable, sort of classic mid-pointy, with nice wide straps. Very supportive.

Grow hair out for 30s 'do?

That curly bob is adorable and would look great on you! BUT, if you know your natural hair type would look bad unstyled in that cut, and you're not inclined to want to mess with your hair every day, you will be saving yourself a world of hurt by skipping it. I had to learn this the hard way...

Another question about hair--taming the mane.

The reason they were using an acid rinse was to neutralize the PH after using an alkaline, soap-based cleanser. It's not necessary after modern shampoos, they are PH balanced anyway. That said, I sometimes use a much milder vinegar rinse on my hair (1 tablespoon vinegar per cup water), it's...

Creeestmas stocking! A little felt stocking I made for my niece. An exact duplicate of one made for her mom in the 60's. All sewn by hand; I had planned on doing the main seam by machine, but due to some bad planning the machine and I were in separate cities at a crucial moment. So I just...

    Beauty Complaints

You know what I hate? Touch-ups. I like applying makeup the first time around, but any maintenance after that just feels like an annoying chore to me. And it never looks as good as it did at first. I don't wear makeup on a daily basis mostly because I don't want to have to fiddle with my...

    Show us your hair do's....

My hair is never baby-soft and silky, but it is completely uncooperative on washday. If I'm setting it, I'll do it the next night or later, after misting with water/setting lotion. It's big and fluffy on washday, goes its own direction and does not take no for an answer.

Deciding on a new color with Pixie Cut

That's a great color on you! That's the fun part of having short hair, you can really play with color without having to worry too much about the consequences. Enjoy!

    Show us your vintage patterns!

Simplicity 1430 I'm happy about this one! I've had my eye out for a nice basic tie-neck blouse for a while, and it's so nice that this one also includes that cute cutout top. Kind of odd too; they are totally different styles, all different pattern peices- I'm used to seeing patterns...

Watch Your Carriage, Madame! A Guide to Good Posture

I've always had freakishly good posture. Never really worked at it, didn't really think much of it, but people have commented on it since I was a little kid. I get a spinal x-ray last year to get to the root of my months-long headache and, come to find out... my spine is too straight! Most...

Thank you Lauren and Inky! It's always so flattering to get compliments from people whose work I admire. And that's not a matching kerchief, just a cream-colored one. But that's a good idea! I was actually planning on making a headband out of the scraps, maybe I'll see if there's enough...

Wrap dresses take over the world! I seem to be on a wrap-dress kick. They are pretty fun, but I'll stop now! I made a walkaway last month, and now just finished this little number: It's a Swirl-style wrap with a button at the back neck. A 1971 pattern, but I don't get a very 70's vibe...

Show Us Your Hair Set and Results

I did a rag-curl set a while back and posted it on the hair-do thread, let's see... here it is. (scroll down just a tad) I had good luck with it; it's a good way to deal with longer hair, and it was very comfortable to sleep on.
