For more modern resources I'd recommend David Coffin's books on shirt-making and trousers which break down construction step by step. He does go into great detail on older styles of button flies, for example. The Art of the Tailor by Robert Doyle is great if you want to do pattern drafting, but...
My cousin had her tongue pierced for a while and it wasn't terribly noticeable most of the time. She did find it hard to talk for long periods with it in, such as speeches. She would always take it out when talking on the phone and had one conversation that went quite a while causing the hole to...
I finished my second "modern" suit this January (I usually work on 18th century styles). It's a 1920s style tailcoat suit for my husband. He's hard to fit with broad shoulders. There's a lot I want to finesse in terms of fitting on my next attempt, mainly to keep working on the shoulders and...
My hair is just below chin length. With a blunt bob pin-curled it looked like this:
You probably want a little bit of layering, but I wouldn't do too much.
I've got a large number of vintage style garments I've made up for sale on Etsy. Most are around size small or x-small. All have been worn only a few times at most- they just don't fit me well anymore! I'm a professional tailor, so everything is well made.
The prices are negotiable since I know...
It didn't feel any different in terms of stretchiness (just softer). I made up the correct size for me and it came out perfectly. No measurements to compare to, but it fits correctly. We'll see how the cardigan comes out, I suppose!
I recently went on a cruise and made a pajama set (amongst other things) for it:
The trousers were from Eva Dresses 1934 Lounging Ensemble pattern, while the top is basically two triangles cut on the bias.
My favorite so far is Allyn Scura, though they can be a little pricey. My best pair of 1930s sunglasses were a random find on ebay, so just keep looking!
Both of my Grandmothers (born 1918 and 1926) remember wearing snug shoes as long as possible when growing up because they couldn't afford new ones. They always wore snug shoes, and their feet never had a chance to expand. They both had extremely narrow feet (something I've inherited), but were...
Just found that Hush Puppies came out with a new collection called "1958". After scouring the internet, I finally managed to find a pair of off-white Basis in my size! Hopefully they'll be the perfect summer walking shoes.
I really love the aesthetic of the '30s, but I needed a WWII dress for this weekend. So, I found a picture of a 1940s pattern I liked (similar to some '30s gowns) and altered it slightly- different collar, buttons, smaller/more pleats. I had the perfect buttons that needed to be used anyway!
I tried using rollers instead of pincurls the last two nights. I can't seem to have the patience to wait for my hair to dry enough before rolling, though. The back is always damp and not curly (a little bit of heat fixes that, thankfully). It does go up much faster than pincurls, however.
I've started doing Lindy Hop every Thursday night and decided it was the perfect excuse to start learning pincurls and experimenting with 1930s styles. I've done it a few times, but not enough to know how different curling styles affect my hair. Tonight is a big dance at a local winery, so I...
