I grew up near Chautauqua, but I'd only been there once or twice before I moved away. I think I was probably too young to appreciate the culture of it, though, save for the little wooden airplane gliders that I got there. Those things were awesome.
I'm pretty much in agreement with Doctor Strange. It was pretty flawed, but it was great fun -- probably more fun than the last two. And a lot less dull.
If only it were maybe a half-hour longer to give the characters some breathing room... coulda been great.
I think I'm the only person that comments on Mr. Malmont's Amazon blog. But I've known about this book for a while, and plan to go to the reading in Manhattan next week. I'm very excited about this book -- it's right up my alley!
I second the recommendation of Rhapsody. You can pick an artist, click on "Artist So-and-So Radio," and voila! You've got a radio station that streams music of that artist and similar ones. Plus, you can stream the service from their website, so as long as you're near a computer you'll never...
Well, "retro" and "metropolitan" just seemed so right for each other...
It's an alias I use because, frankly, I don't much trust the internet. It lets me say what I feel like saying.
Man, Nero Wolfe was one of my favorite shows of all time. Even my girlfriend shared my love for it. Somehow, I managed to start up a very brief email correspondence with the illustrator that did the opening title art for each episode -- who also happened to be Timothy Hutton's wife. It was a...
I'm currently reading "The War of the Worlds Murder" by Max Allan Collins, the author behind the original "Road to Perdition." It's about Walter Gibson (the creator of the Shadow) trying to solve a murder amidst the Orson Welles production of War of the Worlds, on Halloween 1938.
Sounds like...
My girlfriend just got caught up on the new "Doctor Who" series -- which, for a girl that constantly mocks my taste in sci-fi and horror, is pretty amazing. I like the show quite a bit, and it's growing on me now. More than that, I'm totally hooked on the theme song. I tried finding a copy of...
What would a 1930s vintage wedding be like? I'm not in front of the judge just yet, but maybe in a year or two... I'm trying to convince the Lady Retropolitan to go retro.
I made that m'self. I'm pretty sure the main font was Savings Bond, and the script was Alako-Bold. I don't remember the exact name of the site that I found the fonts on, but it was something like 1001freefonts.com. Something of that nature -- a google search would probably get you there...
I just updated my personal blog design to reflect a very retro, very pulpy attitude, and I think that many of you would appreciate the look of it!
That being said, it only took me a couple days here on the Lounge to realize that I don't share many of your political and religious beliefs, so...
My problem is that have way too many passions -- I barely have time for one, but I'm always stretched in different directions. I love LOVE movies (went to film school, after all), I love illustration and design (my degree's in art, too), I love writing (starting a book this year), I love new...
SCARS on women! Not horrible, disfiguring scars, but slender thin lines. I don't know what it is about them...
...but I find them massively sexy for some reason.
*runs off to watch 'Bride of Frankenstein'*
I was just staring off into the distance (my living room wall) last night as I smoked my pipe, and a thought wandered into my head and settled:
What did people eat in the 1930s and 40s?
What was a typical meal like, main courses and desserts? What kind of appetizers did they prepare...
The sound quality of the DVD files was about as good as you can expect -- I mean, heck, once they're made digital, they're probably not going to degrade. I imagine that the seller just bought up collections and added to his own digital library, since the new collections are running at about...
I hope you didn't go for the $65~ CD set, 'cause a while back I got a 28 DVD set of Old Time Radio for about ten bucks higher, including hundreds of episodes of Jack -- I think there was one full DVD devoted solely to him. Search for "Old Time Radio DVD" on eBay; when I ordered, the seller was...
Since my well-worn double-breasted wool overcoat sprouted holes in both elbows and rid itself of all the right-side buttons in ONE WEEK, I figure it's high time to find myself another coat before the real cold season comes. I went looking over at Macy's last night with my girlfriend, where we...
