Life as it was lived then

What I remember being called "white gas" was a common reference to Amoco's premium product (leaded gas in the day, un-leaded later in time) it was clear, had no color at all. Alot of their customers swore by it. Flip

I think the wax was used typically for canning purposes. I have an old box of "Gulfwax" paraffin "for sealing jam and jelly glasses" 1/4# box sold for .08 cents, amazing. Flip

My wife wanted me to bid on this one, told her I didn't need another hat that didn't fit me. She said the box was worth $22!! Very nice hat, very nice price Flip

    Defending your Hat

Ya did the right thing... ...unfortunatly, I'm afraid I would have acted on impulse. I would have been tempted to dot his head about 5 times before he hit the ground, which would probably have led to me hitting the ground at some point in the scuffle. The kid was lucky and perhaps learned a...

    LA in the 1940's

After re-reading your post Mr H, I had forgotten about the rubber co, it seems like it was Firestone? but I can't quit recall. They were all mixed up in it together I guess, GM, Standard Oil and Firestone..and then came the smog that I remember so well growing up in Riverside back in the 60's...

    LA in the 1940's

Mr H The Red Car system was long gone by sometime in the 1950's I believe. It is true that GM (and Standard Oil) played a large part in doing away with the rail line. It was well traveled and served from Long Beach to as far east as "The Inland Empire", Riverside and San Bernardino. The idea...

    LA in the 1940's

Of course the trolly system is long gone but you can still find some of the old deco buildings, City Hall probably being the most noteable and recognizable. The theatre district is also pretty well preserved with all the old movie houses etc. And then there's Hollywood....My dad told the story...

Has anyone been tempted to buy...

My point J.M.S. is, I'de like to think that most of the folks here at The Lounge have a deep appreciation for the Golden Era, myself included. Most are probably not scouring the web looking for the latest fashion trends according to Mr. Depp. I like Johnny Depp..the man is cool...very cool...but...

Has anyone been tempted to buy...

I could care less what Johnny Depp, Kidd Rock or any one else wears or thinks is in vogue today. These hats were cool 2 or 3 decades before these cats were even born! On the other hand, Bogart, Joseph Cotten and others from the era...were there!! These icons from "the day" are what made these...

Thanks Jack and Bolthead, I'm trying the water method around the band but I think Jack might be on to somethin', the hat may have shrunk slightly. The band isn't puckered at all, just slightly pulled away about 1/16" under where it's bashed in front. At any rate, I'm hopin'...

    ..another steaming question??

Hello! New to your forum but old on the topic. My question, I recently acquired an old Champ fedora, very reasonably priced (10 bucks, how could I go wrong?). It was in pretty rough shape though, not stored properly, creases in grosgrain band, very lumpy and out of shape overall etc. etc. But I...
