I've enjoyed and learned a few things from this thread.
Tis interesting just how many hats are "Vintage". Probably in hats, that means.....costs a little more?
Old newsprint would be interesting.
Is the cork you use just thin cork such as is available at hobby stores? 1/8 inch is the thinnest I see on a quick look.
Is there a preferred product to place inside sweatband to help a hat fit just a little better?
I see various types of foam and David Morgan has a white "felt" of some sort. Is one much better than the other?
In years gone by I've used playing cards and paper towel with varying degrees of...
Thank you and I think that 5 1/2 crown is plenty. The store said they were low on stock because it is late in the season.
Mid July seemed to be straw hat season to me!! I know stores have to gear up for what is coming a fair time before the customers will be looking for it.
I'm pretty new to the forum and I'm amazed how many old hats are still so nice.
Also, it is interesting to see where the old hats were from based on the stamping on the sweat band.
Confession: I have not read the entire Sunbody thread.
The few Sunbody hats available to try on were too short crowned and the crown was narrow up above the sweatband. Also, the factory fit on these hats is too round. I want to order a non creased hat with a taller crown and try to make it a...
Akubra Banjo Paterson. I wanted a hat that I would not be tempted to wear when I do hot sweat work outdoors.
This is my first hat that I would not consider to be purely an outdoors work hat. But I could if it came down to it.................. if I had to.......I suppose.
Thank You! It is my first non-work felt hat, if that counts.
I wanted a hat that I might not grab when I go out to sweat in the sun.......
That is a fun picture. Looks different in north Alabama than I had imagined.
Ordered from Everything Australian on July 4th. The hat hit US Customs on July 7, sent to Post Office on July 10 and arrived to me in Kansas on the 12th. Not bad!
I am paying attention to this topic. I got an Akubra Riverina a couple weeks ago and it was a very good fit. Being concerned that the Riverina might shrink I made a custom hat block.
My Akubra Banjo Paterson arrived today. It is labeled the very same size as the Riverina but fits somewhat...
Even some older cheap hats performed well in rain.
This old thing is a 1972-1973 Circle C Brand. I wore it as I guided in Colorado up between Creede and Lake City. It was rained on and snowed on many times and never leaked through. The sweat band rotted and the hat is loose but not floppy. I...
I was trying my 12 inch contour gauge and wondering how to accurately connect the forehead shape to my back head shape to make a solid block. Voilà That $9 item should be just the tool for this job.
Great tip thanks!
After I asked i did a quick web search and see what you mean. Thank you for bring this up and for the further explanation. My head is standard oval but with a flat spot at the very front of the oval.
There is a thread on this site of a person who called their head shape "egg shaped". They...
This is an informative post for us (me) new hat owners. My 1st felt hat was purchased several decades ago and no longer has a leather band. However, my new felt hat is being used as an outdoor work hat and is getting a lot of sweat. I want it to form to my head shape but not shrink.
Is the...
