The VW's look great, those things were everywhere back in the '60s. I spent a lot of time in the back seat of one of the VW buses back when I was a kid...
I've always wondered about that name...did people really camp out of these planes? I recall that it's really quite a small plane, isn't it only one seat? Something that small doesn't seem very suitable for camping unless you travel really light!
A stereo in a Series Land Rover? What an odd suggestion!
Reminds me of a caption from a local newspaper one time when my truck appeared in it:
"This old Land Rover, the kind Jane Goodall would have ridden in, is a far cry from the Land Rovers of today. If it had a radio it would have been...
Wow, that's amazing. Sometimes I think we have too many rules today...
I have done this on my computer flight simulator, though I don't suppose that counts :-)
"Top speed of 45" is very conservative. Others without overdrives tell me they do 55 or more. With the overdrive in mine I can do 65 to 70 pretty comfortably assuming the road is flat and smooth. 65 mph is just over 3000 rpm so it's not working the engine that hard.
Not exactly how these...
Well, I certainly share your opinion of the long wheelbase Land Rover being the classic safari vehicle. I have one of my own, a bit older than yours. When showing it off to the public I like to dress it up:
But it does get used as intended at times too:
I wonder how much of the difference is just a matter of attitude...the early adventurer being more accepting of getting stuck and the need to dig out. Today we expect our vehicles to get us through (all too often with little driver skill!).
Another big difference is in the ease of getting dug...
Those old cars look so fragile. It's amazing that they held up to that kind of punishment. Though I guess back in the day many of the regular roads were pretty rough too so the cars are apparently tougher than they look.
It's also interesting that they used very little power back in those...
Some interesting gear there. I'm curious about the lantern, what was that originally used for? It looks like it has a red lens in the back, was that lit or what was its function?
I'm a little late on replying to this, but just wanted to add another vote for the Overland Journal. I've subscribed since the first issue and enjoyed every one of them. I'll probably never get to actually do the types of trips covered but it's great reading about them. The Classic Kit section...
Hi Matt...I'm pretty sure it was one of your Guns and Rovers posts that lead me here. Love this thread, it could be a whole forum by itself :-)
Love the 1935 book and photos. Did you know there's a reconstructed version of the Osa's Ark airplane still flying?
Must be a Jeep thing :-) On the series Land Rovers, mounts are available for the bonnet or the back door. The back door mount is the one that is avoided as it eventually causes damage to the door, body, hinges, etc. The "deluxe" bonnet that is dished in the shape of the tire and has the mounting...
A '68 Land Rover would certainly be a IIA, though likely the later style IIA than mine. At some vague point around then they changed from the metal dash to a plastic covered dash and moved the headlights from the breakfast to the wings giving the trucks a quite different look.
Rhinolined out...
Safari Footwear
Since this thread has been quiet for a couple of days, time to start it up again. When I first posted some photos of my collection along the fringes was one set of footwear and more recently I've added another pair.
Both come from Tag Safari:

Interesting, I didn't know TJ Maxx sold furniture, thought they were all clothing...if it really is similar it would be worth a look. Darn, they don't have any kind of online catalog though so I'd have to trek down to the actual store...
I've bought several things from Tag Safari. They're all still too new to comment on how well they'll last but no complaints so far. They do occasionally have sales by the way, but possibly only to previous customers, so you might want to try one less expensive item and then hold out for other...
