The open weave one that the Mail Carriers wear (also worn by utility workers in my area) are available at uniform supply companies (where cops, postlal workers, etc, buy their uniforms). I bought a white one that fits my 8 1/4 bucket, and sprayed it dark green for Venture Scout activities.
I say keep 'em lie they were intended...
A classy homburg really stands out in an time where lots of "dudes" wear stingy brim styled fedoras from the $20 rack. The 8 1/2 '20s Mallory I got from Dinerman was "fedora-ized" by someone and looked like this:

The only Panama I own is a Brent Black..
I have had my BB "Afficionado" for about 4 years now. It has traveled from CA to Boston, FL, Mexico, HI, and many stops in between. It is a bit sweat stained and smudged, but I think that shows character and is a testament to me liking the hat and its...
hand printed or modified size tags are not unknown in odd-sizes vintage hats. My Stetson Sovereign Homburg in 8 1/8 has a "cut and paste" tag, where they cut the 8 off of another tag and taped it over the 7...My "Holy Grail," the 8 1/2 high-crown Mallory Homburg from the '20's, has the...
I REALLY UNDERSTAND your pain...
I wear an 8 1/8 or larger hat, and only have a few in my collection. I own the Mallory 8 1/2 that was previously mentioned...here's a link to the before and after: http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=18230

I wore my 8 1/2 '20's high-crown Mallory homburg today...a bunch of folks commented that they had never seen that exact style.

sell and use the $$$ to get what you want..
I have two neat Homburgs (the '20's 8 1/2 mallory and a '60's Stetson beaver) that were "fedora-ized" at some undetermined point in time. The Steson's brim was too stingy for my taste, and the Mallory's crown is again too tall for the narrow brim...
The Patterson house at Ardenwood park..

I use a "European mens carry-all" daily...
It's made by Tumi, and contains my wallet, sunglasses, work credentials (and badge), cigars, lighter, knife, phone, etc. Sometimes, my PDA or Ipod.
Being a large guy, I rarely carry my wallet in my pocket as it cuts circulation off when I am wedged...
I fondly remember the kids parties from the 60's and 70's..
The hosting mom would decorate a cake, sometimes with a theme (pirates was a boy's favorite). Kool-Aid. Ice cream in little plastic cups with the wooden paddle-spoon. You would wear the paper cone hat and play pin the tail...
