Probably an embarrassing question about jacket weight...

I am 100% with you here! I'm aware of what you and other mods had to go through last time, not only in the infamous thread, but also other threads which kept referring to it. And I'm sorry about that. Now, this particular thread right here has been totally harmless, with zero ill intent on my...

Probably an embarrassing question about jacket weight...

Yes, I already knew this. I just didn't make the relevant connections in regards to the weight, all the things that have been mentioned by now. Amateurish, embarrassing, maybe even downright stupid from my side, but it is what it is. This is precisely what I did not know, and learned in this...

Probably an embarrassing question about jacket weight...

Not even once did I state that I like the lighter jacket less than the heavier one because of it's lighter weight. I explicitly stated that I was merely confused about the weight difference, but that I prefer the touch, feel, and everything else about the lighter one. The answer to your question...

Probably an embarrassing question about jacket weight...

I don't think I've completely answered your question beforehand, where I said: First jacket (stiffer, smaller): 2,10 kg Second jacket (softer, larger, supposedly thicker): 1,90 kg So maybe the following information is also what you wanted to know. Simply put, this is by how much larger the 2nd...

Probably an embarrassing question about jacket weight...

FWIW, the maker said that they "skive" (exact word) the leather down. In this case they had to go from 1,4 mm to 0,9 mm through "skiving". And then for the 2nd jacket the same 1,4 mm leather was supposedly skived down to 1,0 mm.

Probably an embarrassing question about jacket weight...

It could be that you were not around at the time or are simply unaware. I have posted a thread on this forum a long time ago, which turned out to be one very long, but also, unfortunately, one of the most controversial and negative threads ever posted here, because as time went on it became...

Probably an embarrassing question about jacket weight...

No bait from my side. No reason at all. Your explanation actually makes sense, and I appreciate it. So unless someone else has something to add, I can totally accept your explanation as the reason for the weight difference.

Probably an embarrassing question about jacket weight...

They are advertised as exactly the same type of leather, but yes, the heavier smaller one is much more stiff. My initial theory was that the larger (but softer, and lighter) one was just thinner (even though I ordered thicker), and that this would be the reason... but now after what Aloysius...

Probably an embarrassing question about jacket weight...

I honestly haven't the slightest clue what this is supposed to mean, unless it's an attempt to remind people of issues from the past, and thus forcing the moderators to close/delete this completely harmless thread. If that was not your intention, then I sincerely apologize. But if it is, please...

Probably an embarrassing question about jacket weight...

Yes, they are identical, just the size is different, like I said, think of one and the same jacket going from L to XL. There is no extra inner pocket, no bigger leather facing around the liner, and it is also the same lining (cotton) on both. Thanks for your reply.

Probably an embarrassing question about jacket weight...

Lol no, really nothing at all to do with that project, although the paragraph from my last thread relates to that, which is why we should refrain from discussing it. This was determined by moderators after the thread in question was closed. :) And no, there is no additional hardware. It is...

Probably an embarrassing question about jacket weight...

Thank you, Carlos840. The thing is, it is the same manufacturer and exactly the same type of steerhide. I am talking exactly the same, again, unless I wasn't being told the complete truth by the maker. The lighter jacket feels about 5x softer to the touch, it is much, much less stiff, which is...

Probably an embarrassing question about jacket weight...

Dear Fedora Lounge, This might be (and probably is) an embarrassing question coming from - more or less - a leather amateur. A few weeks ago I had two jackets custom made. Both are from the same exact same type of steerhide. The first jacket's thickness was supposed to be around 0,9 mm, and...

    Five Star Leather Jackets

Just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who helped advise me via private convo yesterday and today. You know who you are. :) I really appreciate it, this forum is awesome.

    Five Star Leather Jackets

This is Shawn's current "distressed steerhide brown". It's from some random jacket that he just sent me as an example, two pictures. The lighting / setting can be somewhat misleading, but it doesn't look like a "bad" brown... I suppose? Would love to hear some thoughts.

    Five Star Leather Jackets

It has a slightly purple-ish tint to it, which I'm not sure how it looks on a complete/finished jacket. Five* has various different browns and distressed versions on almost every hide except for steerhide, which is unfortunate because my next jacket needs to be steerhide, and I can't find the...

Differences between buffalo and steerhide leather jackets?

This makes sense but is also good to hear because Five* has more interesting colors when it comes to buffalo compared to steerhide, so if the properties are very similar (especially the strength, durability and weight), then that's great.

Differences between buffalo and steerhide leather jackets?

I'm interested in the most important differences between buffalo hide and steerhide, and there is some conflicting/confusing information online, so I thought I'd ask the real experts... 1.) In terms of "weight", how different is the same exact jacket in 1,0 mm buffalo hide vs. 1,0 mm steerhide...
