We sell hats in the UK and it's notable how many people retire their cheap straw hats for a proper panama. We've thought about having a tombstone shaped box for the hats to be interred, a sort of graveyard of bad style.
We have a couple of these for our business and use them all the time. They work really well if you want to stretch a hat just a couple of sizes. You will need to leave the hat on for a day or two. Occassionally, I will put my own hats(an old vintage one which is a little small) on one and only...

I have noticed panamas drying out in hot sunny weather i.e., leaving one in the sun on a table, generally though they rehydrate while wearing them due to perspiration.
Leaving the hat in the bathroom while taking a shower is a good idea and has been recommended to me...
