Yes, they are very smooth, but my shoulder is extremely temperamental unfortunately - it'll take exception to the wrong kind of movement even if I only do it twice.
Oh that's in lovely condition isn't it! I have a modern electric machine too and I never use it at full speed. Took me months to get above the minimum setting. I'm never completely convinced that using a hand-crank machine regularly is good for my dodgy shoulder but sadly I don't have room for...
I grew up watching my mother use a machine like that, and eventually bought my own for about £10 from someone whose mother-in-law had had it in her attic for decades - if memory serves mine was made in 1911. It has a beautiful art deco style wooden case that locks wth a key, and a dozen...

It took me a couple of weeks to think up a username, but I've signed up since I think my eccentricity has finally found its spiritual home in the 1940s. I'm a clothes and costume nut fast developing an obsession with all things 40s, and I love making my own vintage style...
I'm currently trying to do exactly this but the photos in this post have been steamrollered away by time, and archive.org doesn't have the page. Does anyone still happen to have the photos?
