The process I used is similar to what's shown at the link that Peacoat provided, but with a couple of modifications. I'll try to post some images this weekend.
I did this recently with a 1950s coat. The nap was worn off the original cuff ends, and after letting out all of the extra fabric at the sleeve end, there is a ring of wear encircling the cuff, about half an inch from the new end, but like you say it's only noticeable if you know what to look...
I have one of those. I've wondered if it was a prototype for testing the Melton fabric, which would have been new at the time and didn't replace Kersey until a number of years later (1979?).
Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. My guess was that they weren't sewed through the lining, but every button on my coat was sewn that way. I guess they had all been replaced at one time or another, not surprising for something more than 60 years old.
I decided to re-sew all of the buttons...
I have a question for Peacoat and the other experts here. Has anyone seen a vintage peacoat with buttons that they know, beyond any doubt, are in their original state? I'm going to reattach some buttons on one of my coats (a nice one that appears to be from 1952) and I'd to do it in the...
Thanks Peacoat for the information about those tags.
I'm debating whether the sizing is worth taking a chance on. A 38L from that era fits me reasonably well, but I'd like something more snug, hence my interest in the 36L. But as a long and lean guy I need extra sleeve length, and it appears...
Hi Peacoat,
Thanks for the tip about DSA and DLA. If I'm reading the dates right, there are two, dated '75 and '77, that are DSA, and one dated '78 that is DLA.
Also, apologies for an error that I made - one of them (the '75) is labeled Modern Garments Inc. rather than VI- MIL. But it is...
I'm looking at some 36L peacoats on eBay. There are three, and each is from the metal button era (two silver, one gold). Each item includes a photo of the tag, and each tag has a '7x' number where we expect to find the year. So these things all indicate that the coats are from the 70s.
I'm...
Since I'm in the market myself I'd be interested in any more details you're willing to share.
p2p measurement when laid flat? (I'm trying to figure out if 38 would work on me)
Sleeve length from top to cuff?
Type of pocket lining?
Where did you find it?
How much?
Thanks!
I appreciate your comments. That's consistent with what I've found so far, to my disappointment.
I do see that there are a few Kersey XLs listed on the Vintage Trends web site that are said to be from 1968. But if my notes from reading Peacoat's various comments are accurate, that's the year...
Hi Mr. Peacoat, I was hoping I could get your take on something. I've been looking for a vintage peacoat (8 button/kersey/corduroy) in size 40L. Despite having set up what I believe are the appropriate searches on eBay and following them religiously since last winter, I have yet to see a...
