I agree that this has been a good discussion. I have lots of hats for different occasions. My Stetson Pinnacle is EXACTLY what I wanted for the situations in which I wear it. It's a great hat.
If I'm going to order a custom hat, I'm going to order something I can't otherwise get, whether that...
Try the Biltmore!
I tried on a few homburgs by Biltmore during my last visit to Hats Plus in Chicago. In particular, the Eleganza was my favorite. The felt is awesome and the style is great. I didn't buy one because they didn't have Cognac in my size. But I did pick up a couple other Eleganza's...
I love my Pinnacle!
I have a Pinnacle in black, pictured in my avatar. It's one of my favorite hats. Yes, it cost about as much as my two hats from Vintage Silhouttes, but it fills a different niche. The hats from VS, with their taller crowns, are more attention-getting. As such, I feel that a...
Too big: sell it!
As an alternative, if you feel your hat is just not the right size, you could post it for sale here. Then you don't have to pay the shipping back to Australia. You may have to price it slightly under what you paid, but it could be cheaper for you.
First things first, take care of yourself and your health. As much as we all want more hats, we want you to be alive and well more. You've given so much to those of us who are lucky to have some of your hats.
I've had some heart trouble and luckily dodged 2 heart attacks. I now have 3 stents...
That is one of the most handsome hats I've ever seen! It really gives me some ideas for my next work of Art. Congratulations, and kudos for having the taste to go with something a more interesting!
For me, crown height is more a factor of brim width. I think the ratio of the height to width determines whether the hat will be flattering to and individual or not. A taller crown can make a medium brim look more like a stingy, and a shorter crown will exaggerate a medium brim.

"Budget-minded"? I spent almost $500 on my last visit to Hats Plus, but I got 3 hats for it, including a $225 Biltmore Eleganza which is one of the best hats I own.
Optimo is a very high-end hat store. People should be sure to point that out when they make a recommendation that you visit...
Before you pick a store, you'd better define what you're after. Optimo is great, but I don't think they have any hats for less than $400.
If you're looking for a production hat, including some higher end hats by Borsalino and Biltmore, then I recommend Hats Plus. I bought a couple Stetsons...
Definitely link up with another hat guy. There's nothing so helpful as taking an experienced hat-wearer when you go shopping to get feedback on what's a good fit and looks good for your face. Plus, they will be far better at spotting differences in quality, particularly in the felt.
Welcome...
I prefer to use a shoulder holster. For dire situations, I like to keep a backup in an ankle holster.
Oh! You said "packing a hat", not "packing a gat". Nevermind.
What? Are you in the witness protection program or something? Where's the rest of your face? How can we judge the hat if we can see if it balances with your features?

Yes! I won the auction for the grey porkpie on the Merchants board:

The hat is just beautiful and the felt feels fantastic. It's so great to be able to get a vintage hat in such great condition. My thanks to johnnyphi for making this...
I really think this hat can only be described in German. I'd call that a Kopfzelt or head tent. I apologize to any German readers if I have selected the wrong variant for "tent" or improperly constructed my new word. Still compared to Luftkissenfahrzeug (air pillow drive craft) which is the word...
Losing weight DOES make your head smaller
I've lost 70 lbs in the last 10 months, and my hat size is definitely smaller, nearly a full size. Prior, I always bought hats that were 7 3/8 to 7 1/2. Now I'm between a 7 1/4 and 7 3/8.
I'm working to take off another 40 lbs, but I don't think my...
