Prefer fur felt, black ribbon, but not a deal-breaker. Budget: would like to see what I can get for < $100.
Feel free to contact me @ timeras@gmail.com.
Thanks
Hi there, I'm also looking for a fur felt grey fedora, however I'd rather have a wider, unbound brim, size 7 3/8-1/4. My budget is negotiable, but if I could stay under a $100, that would be nice.
Appreciate any info/looks.
Well, I was in the store not two weeks past, and have some first hand info...
After having my second-hand fedora reblocked and brushed (for Free, no less!) I mentioned my dismay at having heard such a dastardly rumor- this being my first visit and all. Now, I can't put names to the family...
In no particular order:
Kirk & Spock, "A Piece Of The Action"
Damn near everyone in "The Sting"
Tom Selleck in "Lassiter" (apparently there are no pics of him in this hat on the internet...least that I could find...)
and, of course,
Well, personally, at age 13, Raiders is what introduced the fedora to me in '81... I have since become the major old/classic movie buff, but to me, it is that hat that's the cultural icon. I've had other, cheapo fedoras before, but the appeal ebbed in my late 20's-30's... But now living in...
To be honest, I barely glanced at the pugarees... since they didn't have the ribbon I was looking for, I was already moving on, trying to remember what else I wanted to try and have done to it at the moment... They did try to suggest some to me, that and other band-type things, but NO, I was...
An update...
Just to update you guys...
I took the hat downtown (Seattle) to Byrnie Utz's Hats, to see what I could get done, and if I couldn't find out more about the hat in general. The folks there were very kind and helpful. They kindly brushed and re-blocked/bashed it (center dent) free...
Shave Secret...
Hi Guys... lotsa great info out here... but in going over the thread, i've only seen a shave oil mentioned once, and that was about a homemade recipe or somesuch...
I've been using this stuff for more than a few years now, and swear by it:

Boy, I just don't know how to answer that... having really nothing to compare it to...
I used to have, many years ago, a cheaper, dept. store (JC Penney, etc.) fedora that was not, in my opinion, very stiff, nor do I believe it could possibly have been fur, not for what I paid for it...
Okay, then comes the next obvious question, how do I tell if it's wool or fur felt?
At this point, I suspect wool, but that's just a gut call. I would think (hope) that fur would have a more luxurious, softer feel, but maybe that's just me...
Any hints?
BTW, sorta off-topic, but to those who appreciate my reference to Tales of the Gold Monkey, rumor has it the show might hit DVD in the spring, to take advantage of the pre- Kingdom of the Crystal Skull interest
Thanks guys, I appreciate the warm welcome, and the info... I guess I'll be lurking a while, poring over the wealth of info here...
Can anyone tell me about Dobbs, the manufacturer? I gather they've been around a while, how are their hats, quality-wise? I've seen on the web their current...
Hello Lounge, first off, I'd like to say you've got a helluva good site here...
Secondly, I was hoping to glean a little info about a hat I found at a second-hand/consignment store, and then maybe a little advice about what I can do with it to make it what I want- (no surprise here) an Indy...
