If you really wanted to go complex, retro and non-obvious, you could have your switches triggered by a thermocouple built into a Sam Spade-style desk lighter or perhaps a Brandy warmer.
You would have to wire it so the thermocouple triggers the switching action so you didn't have to keep the...
The sadly now-defunct pipe club I was a member of for a number of years had several women members.
Most smoked small Dutch made 'women's' pipes, though a couple smoked larger ones and one even had a bespoke freehand made by one of the other members who happened to be a talented pipemaker...
He he - Yes, Laphroaig is certainly not to everyone's taste, but I'm still a fan! The alcohol does indeed do the trick quickly. I just wanted it to get to work on the stem though and wouldn't be pouring it into the bowl.
I used a touch of Laphroaig to get the lucite taste out of a new churchwarden stem one time. I pulled some into the stem like a straw, blocked both ends and just let it sit for a few days.
Though the taste of the whisky passed quickly, it took with it the plasticky taste and was quite pleasant.
I was in a somewhat similar circumstance a number of years ago when I responded to a call of a man walking onto a University Campus as he was cycling the action on a handgun.
There is no personal carriage of handguns here, so when something like this happens, it is rarely a good thing...
Thank you, Sachet - It was an incredible adventure; I am very much starting to miss some of those sweltering hot days near Delhi now as the snow is falling and its finally turning truly cold here at home.
I certainly miss starting each morning with a cup of tea and the unique ritual that...
Mojave Jack - Thank you. That trip has been a dream of mine for a number of years, and I took the plunge this year. There haven't been a lot of years in the last sixty in which a Westerner may travel into the Northern parts of Kashmir and Ladakh, and regrettably, I fear that there may not be...
Talbot - love that AOPA Navtimer. Although I have been lusting after a Navitimer for some time, it just isn't in my budget quite yet.
I have worn a Citizen Nighthawk as my flying watch for a couple years now. Its limited E6-B-like calculator functions have come in handy a few times now...
That sounds like a fantastic meal - I'm starting to get hungry for Indian food just reading about it. Somehow food always tastes better after a bit of a scare on the road... once that copper-like taste of fear has subsided, of course.
I've tried a couple white ports. While a bit interesting, I haven't really found them to have any real character.
When I was touring the Port Houses in Porto a couple years ago, they were saying that the white ports were being marketed as a 'sweet, neutral spirit' around which to create...
I posted a few photos in the Steamer Trunk about my trip as well, but I thought that I would post here about the kit that I took. I rode a motorcycle from Delhi to close to the furthest point that I could -as a foreigner- go in Northern Ladakh.
I rode a vintage-style Royal Enfield. Though it...
I am not averse to a bit of sensory overload - and perhaps if I hadn't been under the stress of riding while taking it all in, it may have seemed a bit less of an attack - I am no stranger to travelling and do love the immersion in another world.
As for the Roadside dabbas - absolutely. I...
Sorry - I in no way mean that Delhi is a brutal city; It is not.
What I meant was that the city attacks your senses in a very unique way - it is constantly loud - traffic is constantly heavy and the horns are always going. It is hot, humid, polluted, and crowded in a way that I've never seen...
Hi Carter - I didn't keep an online blog of my trip, though I would be happy to detail a bit of the journey here if you others are interested.
I did keep a written journal, though. A friend had given me a hand made travel journal at my going-away get together (I crassly called it the...
I have been back for a couple weeks now, and am just catching up with the rest of my life. I rode a Royal Enfield from Delhi North into the some of the furthest reaches (for a foreigner, at least) of Northern Ladakh.
It was quite the ride.
Jacket: Belstaff Trialmaster
Trousers: Kakadu...
I've always loved the first few weeks of September, when the days are still warm but the mornings crisp.
There is nothing quite like going for a motorcycle ride early on those days and finding a quiet side road where there is still a light blanket of leaves. Watching the swirl of leaves...
Pulling back the throttle on the Tiger Moth on the downwind leg, looking over at my shoulder at the WWII era hanger at the edge of the grass strip, I felt the song of the wind in the flying wires diminish as the airspeed dropped, and the ailerons lose their sharp bite on the air. I took the...
Here, bicycles are bound by the same rules as motor vehicles when on roadways; a conviction for a traffic offence on a bicycle however will not go against your driver's license.
Outside the core, enforcement against bikes is minimal though. I only ever ticketed one bicyclist, who was going...
The Canadian Olympic Cycling Team trains in Calgary, though the Velodrome predates them being there. It isn't fancy, but it does the trick, and is open to anyone to ride on, so long as you bring a track bike. A normal road bike is bound to strike the outside pedal on the banking at low speed...
I don't expect that there is any need for this, but I agree wholehearted with LizzieMaine, as stated earlier.
Far from a non-rider, I ride mountain bike, roadies and years ago, velodrome.
I also ride motorcycles and drive cars with a professional class license. For what its worth, I also...
