It's great to see the young men in the music industry getting into hat wearing.
If you watch the new Kid Rock Video "Roll On", it showcases some of the finer points of Downtown Detroit.
At about the 1 min, 8 sec mark, look for your favorite Metro Detroit Hat Store.
Best Hat Store?
I'm sure that each retailer that sees this thread would like to see their name on this list.
Each has a distinct customer base and would easily consider their store to be the best.
For our stores, with only the 3rd owner in 116 years, consistincy in Customer Service is key...
Store Closing
Kind of sad for me. As a newly married, fresh faced kid from Hamtramck, I was hired by The Wassermans to operate that store for them. My first 16 years were in that store, since then I've been working in Southfield, Detroit, and working the Internet store. Here it is 25 years...
Store Closing
Yes, it is true. Henry The Hatter is closing the Hamtramck Michigan location.
The stores in Detroit, and Southfield Michigan WILL REMAIN OPEN.
The retail district in Hamtramck, MI seems to be even worse than the surrounding communities.
In 1985, when Henry The Hatter...

Pliofilm
Undertow, with the size of 7 5/8, the only size that we would ever stack on top of that would be a size 8, and as you know, not many of those around.
I believe that Sharptoys had mentioned Capas Headwear sells the pliofilm in more reasonable quantities of less than a case of 3,000...
In Detroit that is what we called "The Robin Hood". Very popular in the late '60's. We still get them in for Cleaning & Blocking. 3 years ago we even sent samples out to see if they could be re-made today. No luck as of yet.
Hat Stacking
At our stores, we do stack 3 sizes apart.
Stack 1 = 7, 7 3/8, & 7 3/4 together.
Stack 2 = 6 3/4, 7 1/8, 7 1/2, 7 7/8.
Stack 3 = 6 7/8, 7 1/4, 7 5/8, 8.
Pliofilm in between each.
Sometimes if the ribbon treatment is thicker, we will use the sponge rings to prevent any damage.
Hey Daniel, That's the exact hat he's looking for. Do I smell an offer?
Anyway, D00R, It's really more of how the proportions of the hat will look on you. Of the Trenton Hat, the crown is smaller and tapered, thus giving the brim a wider look. We carry a hat called "The Dillinger" which has a...
Hey D00R,
What you need to do is visit your local hat store, if nothing else but to see if that style you are looking for will suit "Your Style". Just because you saw someone else in a hat that you thought looked good, dosen't mean it will look the same on you. As a hat salesman myself, the...
Cranial endowed?
Stetson and Biltmore make felt hats up to a size 8. Dobbs makes straw hats up to a size 8. The problem as you stated, is getting enough bodies made in the bigger shape. Because we switch our supply with the seasons, we are currently showing Dobbs milan straw hats into a size 8...
At Henry the Hatter in Detroit we carried Makins Hats for many years. Most styles sold very well. For the customer who liked the softest of felt bodies, this was a winner. Her stitched leather hats were also top sellers. I think just the styling and color combinations were ahead of their time...
Wind Trolley
The wind trolley or wind cord was used to keep the hat near the wearer in windy weather. One end of the cord was sewn to the hat under the grosgrain ribbon, with the botton end being loosened and being placed into the buttonhole on the lapel of the wearer's topcoat. On the vintage...
Mothballs P. U.
We tell our customers to use cedar chips/balls/shavings in their hat boxes. But do not let the cedar touch the hat, as the oil from the wood, which has the aroma, will definitely stain the hat.
Have you ever steamed a hat that has been stored with regular moth balls? P UUUUUU!
