But here goes: Artist, Adjunct Instructor(college), interpretive design/exhibit design for a couple of National Parks (grant funded). And a little of this, a little of that.
I *have* noticed that if someone takes offence (very rare)at my using such terms, they are Northern women, of undergrad - postgrad age.
I also use terms for men/boys, too - just more masculine: Mister Man, Brother, Pal, Palsy, Jim, Hot-Shot, Cowboy, Chief, Ace, Fella, etc...

If you use a wristwatch, then you can surreptitiously check the time in meetings, classes, conversations, and - if careful- no one is the wiser. Not so with a cell. Of course, with a cell many traditional manners fall by the wayside.
Of course, I have a cell... but I use it for calls...
Well, as for myself...
... I like being called "Hon", or most any similar term. I also use them myself, quite frequently.
But, of course, I was born in and have lived most of my life in the South.
In Baltimore, it's almost obligatoryto use "Hon".:D
My understanding is that they ALWAYS give priority to freight, at least in the South. Now that the Texas Eagle is goners, it's even worse, as everything hubs to Chicago, even from Texas. It's a wonderful way to travel however - at least it was 15 years ago, when I last rode.

Generally speaking - people dress to project an image, and to associate with a group. Who do people want to be like? Popular musicians (no tie, no suit), blue collar...
