I play old time and bluegrass music, and pretty much wear a fedora or Western any time I leave the house. Here's Bill Monroe and Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs. Seems to me these gentlemen are tilting their hats more than just slighly!
Looking at old photos, it seems that many if not most men wore their hat (fedora or western) at a jaunty angle, in some cases what appears to be a rather extreme one. But when I try to do this with a hat that "fits" when worn straight, I end up with one uncomfortably smooshed ear. I normally...
This looks about right, and it's a 7-1/8: http://www.etsy.com/listing/153557018/vintage-stetson-cowboy-hat-3x-beaver?ref=sr_gallery_38&ga_search_query=Stetson+hat&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_order=date_desc&ga_page=0&ga_search_type=vintage
What type of glue should I use to reattach the little round Stetson tip liner to the inside crown of a vintage Milan straw hat? I'll of course be careful to just use a drop or two to tack it in place; don't want to damage or discolor the natural straw!
Hey Rick,
I'm the auction winner. I wear a true 7-1/4. Think it can be stretched just enough to bring it up to true size? If not by me, maybe Optimo can do it?
Just got this from an eBay auction, but dang it, it's too big for me! Going to stick with 7-1/4 from now on . . .
Hat is a nice-quality panama of uncertain vintage. There's no brand visible anymore; the sweatband says "Hand Woven in Ecuador." Size is a full 7-3/8. Proportions are nice, with...
Just came today. Vintage Dobbs milan, 2-1/8" brim, near mint. Tagged 7-1/4 and fits perfect. Versatile tan-color, with sweet greenish-gold raw-silk pugaree. $67 delivered. This one is going to get a lot of head time this summer!
Anybody have a black Open Road in 7-1/4 or (smallish) 7-3/8 you'd like to sell? New(ish) or vintage, Stetson or a clone, either way I do want a cattleman's crease on this one.
Thanks!
I feel your pain! First thing I do when I get a new (vintage) hat is carefully remove any brand pin. (Must have a half-dozen Dobbs pins by now.) Feathers also come off. So far, any remaining pin holes are all but invisible. Those hideous sewn-in brand labels that new hats seem to be sporting are...
Sort of like buying pre-ripped jeans or having a carefully and deliberately "tousled" hair style, I guess. Either way, a pre-wrinkled brim is not an option this OCD-prone guy would be picking!
Wonderful, thanks! I now know one thing for sure -- it's much easier to buy a hat for yourself than for someone else! I think this Biltmore will be a perfect way to start him off. Oh yeah, I'm also glad I'm only a 7-3/8. It's slim pickins' out there for you big headed folks.
